Soccer or Football? The Global History of the World's Most Popular Sport! Have you ever wondered why some people call it Soccer while others call it Football? Or how a game played thousands of years ago evolved into the sport we know and love today? In this exciting one-time class, we’ll take a journey through history to explore the many different versions of this game that have been played across cultures for over 3,000 years! From the ancient Tchatali played by the Maya in Mesoamerica to Cuju in ancient China and Marn Grook in Australia, we’ll discover how kicking a ball around has always been a part of human history. We’ll also explore: ⚽ How and when the game became popular in Europe ⚽ The evolution of the modern rules of soccer/football ⚽ Why the sport has two different names depending on where you are in the world By the end of this class, you’ll have a new appreciation for the global history of soccer - and you might even impress your friends with some cool historical facts! Get ready to kick off an adventure through time! ************************************************************************************** This class will be taught through recorded lectures and may also include supplemental videos (Youtube), readings, worksheets, and activities (recipes, movies, dioramas, experiments, etc.). Please see the syllabus listed below to see a layout of the lessons included in this course. This class is presented in an asynchronous format, which means there are no live class meetings. You will have 1 year from your class start date to complete the lessons. Communication with me (your teacher) will be for the duration of this course (20 weeks) If you choose to submit homework or communicate (through on the classroom page), I will respond within 24 hours (with Sundays off).
