12 live meetings
6 in-class hoursHomework
1-2 hours per week. I suggest 10-15 minutes daily of listening/reading and practicing the letters learned on days that the class does not meet. Attention spans are short for this age so a little every day will be more productive than one long session of reading once a week. This homework will be completed with a parent or caregiver. 10-15 minutes can be spent on the provided activities and worksheets for each letter sound. These activities are optional but will help with class retention and success.Assessment
Each learner will be assessed informally in class during the review time at the beginning of each class.Class Experience
US Grade Pre-Kindergarten - 2
This Kick-Start Class will get your little one reading books in no time! Online classes can be a challenge for younger students, but in my class we will participate by seeing the letters/words, spelling the letters/words, tracing/writing the letters/words, saying & hearing the letters/words. This kinesthetic approach will help them to remember the material so they can progress quickly with reading. It is Orton-Gillingham based. The class has been updated and will include weekly practice sheets and activities to do at home. Interactive slides will mimic using manipulatives and help those students who need to move to learn. Students will learn the first 12 letter sounds enabling them to read CVC words and short stories. Some words include: dad, Tam, at, mad, hog, Dom, cod, Mag, had, Tad, cam, mat, got, hot, cog, lad, dog, am, hag, ham, hat, Tod, hod, mom, log, tot, cat, tag, dam, cad, dot, cot, Tom, lot, gag, hit, dig, him, lid, dim, did, it, mid, lit, Tim, hid, mig, jam, jog, Jim, jot, jag, jig, kid, kit, Kim. This class has been updated to have less students which results in more focused instruction and better success with young readers. (Sibling discounts available. Mention Sibling Discount when you enroll or message me for more information.)
Learning Goals
In this introductory phonics class, the learner will be reading 36 short vowel words and 8 sight words. The learner will know how to say, read, and write the first 12 sounds of English. Proper hand placement and letter formation are taught with the sounds to reinforce the learning. The letters learned are: c, o, a, d, g, h, m, l, t. This class uses phonemic awareness, visual and kinesthetic cues to help the learner succeed with reading.
