Class Experience

In this flex class, I will teach students how to use a computer keyboard correctly. Although this is a flex class, there will be interaction with me throughout the class and other students enrolled through discussion posts through Outschool, Gmail, and Google docs.

I have been a computer teacher in an elementary school for five years now and I know young students are capable of typing without looking at the keys with enough practice.

The practice should be fun, though! That's why I find the best free games on the internet that will teach the skills I want your child to learn. I will make fun videos that show exactly how to learn keyboarding skills and then follow up with the parents and students to see how they are progressing, according to the fun typing quizzes I offer.

Although there will be no scheduled live classes, I plan to stay in close contact with the students and parents through email, Google Drive, and the Outschool discussion boards.

Week One: I offer fun games and videos that demonstrate correct finger placement on the home keys. I show them how to use the home keys to type like real computer operators! I teach how to use the backspace key, arrow keys, and the Caps Lock key. I teach the Caps Lock Key because I notice that many students accidentally click it and then wonder what's happening!

I emphasize correct posture too. Kids are much better computer operators when they are taught not to slouch.

I make these skills memorable with silly songs and fun games.

Week Two: I offer more games and videos that show correct keyboarding of the home keys, as well as the row above the home keys. I add how to capitalize letters.

Week Three: I offer more games and videos that show correct keyboarding of the home keys, row above the home keys, and the row below the home keys.

Week Four: I offer more games and videos that review correct keyboarding skills of all of the letters and then add the numbers and most commonly used punctuation marks. I introduce the skill of using the top row of keys to create the exclamation mark, @ sign, number sign, percentage, arrows, ampersand, star, parentheses, lines, and plus signs.

Although I don't expect perfection, I hope to build a solid foundation for the kids to keep getting better at keyboarding the more they use the computer.

I will be writing to your child often using the Outschool chat room about the scenarios in the videos and articles so we can discuss the tips that they are learning. Each week, I will ask that your child responds to me about the tips presented, so I can assess his or her understanding and clarify if needed.

Flexible schedule classes are great for busy people - like you!
