Class Experience

Kevin Henkes has an amazing collection of stories focused on different mouse characters. In this lesson I will read aloud the story "Lilly's Purple Plastic Purse" by Kevin Henkes.

"Lilly loves everything about school, especially her cool teacher, Mr. Slinger. But when Lilly brings her purple plastic purse and its treasures to school and can't wait until sharing time, Mr. Slinger confiscates her prized possessions. Lilly's fury leads to revenge and then to remorse and she sets out to make amends."
Every child (and even adults) has experienced being so excited about an item, but not able to share it exactly when they want. Being patient is hard, even for Lilly. We will discuss Lilly's feelings and how they change throughout the book. We also will discuss how Lilly reacts to her feelings (good and the bad) and come up with better ways to express her feelings. Together we will think about what lesson Lilly learns and why.
Then we will go on to learn the about the story element of sequence/retell and how this element can help readers better understand a story. We will see how it is important to be able to retell the story, but really see how important it is to retell in order and not every detail needs to be retold.
We will pull out the most important parts of the story (beginning, middle, end) and orally discuss the order. We then will take our thoughts and get them down on paper. The sheet will provide the learner a way to keep their thoughts organized.
Learners will have a worksheet that can be completed at the end of class or after class (timing depends on how many learners and how the discussions go). The sheet will correlate to what they previously (orally) shared and help the learner get their thoughts down on paper.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Students will engage in a fantastic read aloud collection by Kevin Henkes. The text is very relatable to young readers. We will touch on many different story elements, but dig deeper into making story sequence. When a young reader is able to connect to the story they are more likely to be able to comprehend and retell the story.
I will also try to help your learner think about their feelings and the best way to appropriately deal with their feelings by relating it to the book.
I love all Kevin Henkes' books and think they are perfect for young readers! I was a full-time kindergarten teacher and used many of his texts in my everyday lessons. I will try to form a connection with each learner.
