This lively and engaging course is like a one-room schoolhouse! We'll learn some science, do some writing, learn some social studies, touch on folklore, practice notetaking, and more! We'll even look at art and poetry. While this course generally falls into the "life science" category, it is more realistically described as "interdisciplinary." Why such a hodge-podge? I simply cannot let go of the wonderful community my learners have built in this space. Because of my limited Outschool teaching availability, I have decided to incorporate all of my classes into one ongoing course. Most of these classes were already part of my Keeping Up With the Kingdoms series (which included introductions to the kingdoms, more information on the kingdoms, a series based on keystone species, and a science notebooking class). I am also including my hilarious "Roll and Write" classes (students get to use their creative sides to write a story based on story elements assigned to them by the roll of a number cube) and my some of my "Rabbit Rabbit" series which introduce each new month with everything from birth stones to folk lore to moon phases and more. These classes are so named because of the old belief that saying "Rabbit Rabbit" the very first thing on the first day of a new month will bring good luck. Every class I have built on Outschool is in response to students' requests. Because this course is ongoing, learners are free to come to the classes they choose. Former students should check the schedule so they are not repeating classes they may have taken. Of course, they are always welcome to repeat classes. No two are ever alike. In many of my classes, we play Kahoot! to see how much we've learned. My style is friendly and professional. I deeply value the time I've spent with learners and parents on this platform, and aim to continue my presence as best I can by offering this course. (Please note that I adhere to the consensus of the scientific community regarding regarding evolution, deep time, climate change, and other topics. I address reproduction in a straightforward and scientific manner.) Classes are based on student interest, and subject to change. Our current schedule is as follows: 3/21/23: Weasels, Ferrets, and the Mustelidae Family 3/28/23: Rabbit, Rabbit: Welcome April!

Other Details
Parental Guidance
Regarding reproduction: Reproduction is a natural part of biology. I answer questions about reproduction frankly and in a straightforward, scientific manner.
Regarding Kahoot!: Kahoot is a third-party resource. Learners are not required to set up an account to use Kahoot! They can play directly from their device. No secondary device is needed, and the Kahoot! app is not necessary. Kahoot! does not require users to provide their real names, nor does it collect or store personal information.
Supply List
Please check the classroom for handouts prior to class. Handouts are always optional. For some classes, students will need something to write on and with. I always encourage students to keep a notebook, but it is not required. Colored pencils, washi tape, highlighters, and other fun notetaking enhancements are always fun. :)
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Teacher expertise and credentials
Alabama Teaching Certificate in Elementary Education
Master's Degree in Education from Auburn University
I've been studying science all my life. My father was a renowned herpetologist. As such, I grew up surrounded by animals, plants, and other life forms. I followed my interests in college by studying biology as well as education. I taught middle school science for 21 years, then worked as the middle school science education specialist for the State Department of Education in Alabama for 6 years. In retirement, I am still actively involved in many scientific communities, and stay engaged with groups such as the North American Association for Environmental Education and the National Science Teachers Association. I am passionate and knowledgeable about the study of life, and about passing on this passion to youngsters. Additionally, I am a published writer and write a weekly column in a local paper as a naturalist.
