Description

Class Experience

This class is taught in English.
Students will learn characteristics of living things, and the names and characteristics of the six kingdoms of life.
Students will learn connections and relationships among all living things.
Students will participate in conversations about each of life's six kingdoms by responding to the teacher and to each other on the Outschool platform, and by playing Kahoot!
I've been studying science all my life. My father was a renowned herpetologist. As such, I grew up surrounded by animals, plants, and other life forms. I followed my interests in college by studying biology as well as education. I taught middle school science for 21 years, then worked as the middle school science education specialist for the State Department of Education in Alabama for 6 years. In retirement, I am still actively involved in many scientific communities, and stay engaged with groups such as the North American Association for Environmental Education and the National Science Teachers Association. I am passionate and knowledgeable about the study of life, and about passing on this passion to youngsters.
In addition to participating in the weekly classes ranging from 30-45 minutes long (posted via YouTube), students are encouraged to participate in class discussions via posting and responding to posts in our Outschool classroom and participating in the Kahoot challenges each week. Weekly questions and assignments should take no more than 30 minutes.
Notebook and pencils/pens for taking notes. Handouts are provided with the lessons.
In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
  • Kahoot!
There is no formal assessment. Students answer questions throughout the classes on Kahoot!
No live meetings, and an estimated 0 - 1 hours per week outside of class.
We will use Kahoot! in these classes. Kahoot is a third-party source. I will give students a link which they will follow to access the website Kahoot.it, needed for them to participate. No information is stored on Kahoot!. If learners have the app on another device, they are welcome to use that.

I adhere to the consensus of the scientific community regarding evolution, climate change, and deep time. I cover questions regarding reproduction in a straightforward, fact-based manner.
