Keeping up With the Kingdoms! (6-Day Science Camp)
What's included
6 live meetings
5 hrs 30 mins in-class hoursClass Experience
Who needs the Kardashians when we have biology! The study of LIFE is amazing, and quite complex. To make biology easier to understand, scientists classify life into 6 distinct kingdoms, each with their own defining characteristics. This course is for students who are interested in not only learning about some interesting organisms, but who are also interested in the scientific process of categorization. In this class, we will learn the characteristics of all living things and the six kingdoms. We will highlight each kingdom, meet interesting organisms in that kingdom, and have activities to check for understanding. Although viruses are not living things and therefore do not belong in any kingdom, we will also dedicate class time to viruses because they are so fascinating and strange, and oddly, they have some characteristics of living things. Students are welcome to submit questions or topics of interest prior to class. Please note that I may show very short educational video clips during class, no longer than 2 minutes. The class schedule is listed below. I will present material through slide presentations, and encourage discussion with all students. My teaching style is casual and friendly. If you are interested in this class being offered at another time and/or another day of the week, please let me know. Please note that this camp is an abbreviated version of the Ongoing and Multi-Day class of the same name. Class 1: Animals Class 2: Plants Class 3: Fungi Class 4: Protists Class 5: Bacteria, Archaea Class 6: Viruses, Review
Learning Goals
Students will learn characteristics of living things, and the names and characteristics of the six kingdoms of life. Students will participate in conversations about each of life's six kingdoms by asking questions, contributing their own findings, synthesizing information, making connections, and summarizing.

Supply List
Students should bring something to write with/on. I suggest a notebook, but that is not required. Colored pencils are encouraged. Students playing Kahoot! will need a second device, or will need to be able to open a new window on their computer. The Kahoot! app is optional.
External Resources
In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
Sources
In some classes I will use YouTube for videos of 2 minutes or less to illustrate lessons.
For illustrations that are otherwise difficult to obtain, I may share my screen to original websites. I will only use websites that are educational, and we will only spend a minute or two on these sites.
Teacher expertise and credentials
Alabama Teaching Certificate in Elementary Education
Master's Degree in Education from Auburn University
I've been studying science all my life. My father was a renowned herpetologist. As such, I grew up surrounded by animals, plants, and other life forms. I followed my interests in college by studying biology as well as education. I taught middle school science for 21 years, then worked as the middle school science education specialist for the State Department of Education in Alabama for 6 years. In retirement, I am still actively involved in many scientific communities, and stay engaged with groups such as the North American Association for Environmental Education and the National Science Teachers Association. I am passionate and knowledgeable about the study of life, and about passing on this passion to youngsters.
