We discuss the books at length so make sure your child has read and has copies of the books so we don't give away any plot lines or any spoilers. Day 1-- We will begin with discussion questions about books 6-8.5. What is Nightfall? Why is it so dangerous? Who is the most dangerous villain in the novels? Were you mad at Mr. Forkle for being the twin Mr. Forkle? Do you think Glimmer will stay good? What do you think about Keefe's new ability? Are he and Sophie going to be archrivals or best friends? What do you think will happen? We will briefly discuss any foreshadowing we have seen in books 6-8. We will discuss what person the Keeper books are told from: first or third person. What is first person? What is third person? Why does it matter? I will give all students a chance to answer questions and participate in the class discussion. I will use google slides and classroom discussion. Homework will be to name five books and are if they are told from first or third person perspectives. Day 2--We will begin with each student sharing their book choices and what perspective they are told from. We will discuss the relationships between the characters in the books and how those relationships have changed over time. Have you seen a change in characteristics of a character from the beginning to book 8? What is an example? We will talk about symbols and any symbols we see in Keeper of the Lost Cities. Why do authors use symbols? Are there any symbols that you see in the books that we have not talked about? I will use google slides and classroom discussion. Homework will be to write some characteristics of your favorite character or to create a new character for the series. Day 3-- Everyone will share their character sketches homework from the week before. This week we will dive into the roles that each intelligent species plays in the Keeper world and discuss plot (rising action, climax, falling action and conclusion). We will discuss what each group gives and takes away. Do you think that humans will once again have a place with the elves, gnomes, goblins, ogres and dwarves? Did the humans do what they were accused of? What are your predictions about the books going forward? What are your favorite things about the Keeper books? What do you wish you could change? What themes do we see in the Keeper book series. I will use google slides and classroom discussion. Homework will be to write the first paragraph in the next book. Day 4-- We will make chocolate and mint Ripplefluffs. While the Ripplefluffs are baking we will go over what each student thinks the first paragraph of the next book should be.

I fell in love with the first Keeper of the Lost Cities book about 2 years ago and then shared the great story with my 4 daughters. Since then we have read all the books in the series multiple times, listened to the series on Audible, and gone to see Shannon Messenger in person and had her sign several of our books!
I graduated with a BA in English and Spanish for secondary school teaching. I have always love reading and teaching book studies to students of all ages. I have taught English, Spanish, ESL and religion classes to students ages 7-18 in public school and private settings. I have taught many book studies to ages 8-17 including but not limited to: The Old Man and the Sea, Where the Red Fern Grows, The Red Badge of Courage, The Great Gatsby, The Outsiders, The Scarlet Letter, Tom Sawyer, Letters From Rifka and others. I am currently teaching a Keeper of the Lost Cities book club on Outschool for ages 9-14. Reading is one of my passions and I love sharing that with my children and my students.
