Keeper of the Lost Cities: Literature Study for books 1-5
Class experience
We will be discussing Keeper of the Lost Cities books 1-5 (We will usually stick with books 1-5. We may sometimes hit a subject in one of the later books, but we will try to save those for another class.) We discuss the books at length so make sure your child has read and has copies of the books so we don't give away any plot lines or any spoilers. This will be a mix of a book study and a book club. We will have some more serious Keeper subjects like: What are the themes of the series? What...
In this class students will learn the following: -- What is foreshadowing and where do we see it in the books? --What is the difference between legend, myth and history? -- What is a haiku and how to write one? -- What are character traits and how they relate to the students? -- What are the themes in the first 5 Keeper books? -- And most importantly-- how to make mallowmelt!
I fell in love with the first Keeper of the Lost Cities book about 2 years ago and then shared the great story with my 4 daughters. Since then we have read all the books in the series multiple times, listened to the series on Audible, and gone to see Shannon Messenger in person and had her sign several of our books! I graduated with a BA in English and Spanish for secondary school teaching and planned to teach high school English. I ended up teaching English as a Second Language to ages 7-15. I have taught ESL as a public school teacher and in private settings. I have taught many book studies to ages 8-17 including but not limited to: The Old Man and the Sea, Lord of the Flies, Where the Red Fern Grows, The Red Badge of Courage, The Great Gatsby, Revolution is Not a Dinner Party, The Outsiders, The Scarlet Letter, Tom Sawyer and others. Reading is one of my passions and I love sharing that with my children and my students.
I will send out a PDF each week about what we will be learning and any homework the kids will be expected to do. Each child should have their own copy of the Keeper of the Lost Cities books to discuss in class. What students will need for our mallowmelt bars: butter, 2 cups of butterscotch chips, light brown sugar, eggs, vanilla extract, white flour, baking powder, salt, 3 cups mini marshmallows, 2 cups chocolate chips, 1 (14 oz) can of sweetened condensed milk
