I fell in love with the first Keeper of the Lost Cities book about 1 1/2 years ago and then shared the great story with my 4 daughters. Since then we have read all the books in the series multiple times, listened to the series on Audible, and gone to see Shannon Messenger in person and had her sign several of our books!
I graduated with a BA in English and Spanish for secondary school teaching. I have always love reading and teaching book studies to students of all ages. I have taught English, Spanish, ESL and religion classes to students ages 7-18 in public school and private settings. I have taught many book studies to ages 8-17 including but not limited to: The Old Man and the Sea, Revolution is Not a Dinner Party, Where the Red Fern Grows, The Red Badge of Courage, The Great Gatsby, The Call of the Wild, The Outsiders, The Scarlet Letter, Tom Sawyer and others. I am currently teaching a Keeper of the Lost Cities book club on Outschool for ages 10-14. Reading is one of my passions and I love sharing that with my children and my students.
Week 1-- 5 books and the perspective they are written from.
Week 2-- Write out character characteristics or create a new character for the novels.
Week 3-- A list of what you would bring back from the Lost Cities.
Week 4-- The first paragraph of book 9.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Grades will be given upon request.
50 minutes per week in class, and maybe some time outside of class.
This book has some mild violence. Sophie and her friends are helping to fight a war with another group called the Neverseen. They use their special abilities, throwing stars and other weapons to defeat the enemy.
There is also some romance between the characters in this book. Characters hug and hold hands. So far in the book series there has only been one kiss. Two of the characters want to date Sophie, the main character, and there is tension around that situation.
We do discuss some of these situations in our class, so please be aware that these issues may come up. For more guidance about violence and romance in the book series please refer to Common Sense Media.
