We discuss the books at length so make sure your child has read and has copies of the books so we don't give away any plot lines or any spoilers. If your child has taken my other Keeper Book Clubs this class will have some similarities. Please be aware of that before signing up. I like my book studies to be open discussions where students think critically about the books and respond to questions from me and one another. We will also discuss different literary elements in Shannon Messenger's books as we go through this class. We will be doing all things Keeper so hold on tight for the ride! Day 1-- This will be the marathon discussion of books 1-4 day. We will discuss what person the Keeper books are told from: first or third person. What is first person? What is third person? Why does it matter? Why is this in Sophie's point of view? How would things be different from another character's point of view. What would the books be like if told from the view of another intelligent species? What characters should be given their own Keeper stories. Why? I will give all students a chance to answer questions and participate in the class discussion. Homework will be to write the first page, scene or paragraph of a book or short story from a different character's perspective (a character other than Sophie.) Day 2-- We will make Blitzenberry Muffins! I will send out the recipe before the start of class. While the muffins are baking, students will share their paragraphs that give different Keeper character perspectives. We will also do a Mad Libs Keeper version. I will send out a few different Keeper options for students to fill out before class and we will share the stories that we end up with. Homework will be to create your own Keeper creature that we don't find in the book series. Day 3--This will be a marathon of books 5-8 in the series. Everyone will share their Keeper creature from the day before (you can draw the creature or describe the creature with words). As part of our study of books 5-8 we will discuss setting and how it is used in the Keeper books. What are some differences between the Lost Cities, the Forbidden cities, Ravagog, Gildingham, etc? Where would you want to live in the Lost Cities? Why? How is the setting different between each of the homelands of the intelligent species. Homework will be a list of what you would bring back from the Lost Cities, Gildingham, Ravagog, etc and what human things the Lost Cities needs. Day 4-- Today we will make prattles cookie bars! I will send the recipe out before class. (This is a little more complicated recipe than the muffins, so some students may need parental supervision.) After we finish our cookies we will go over what we want to bring back from the Lost Cities. If there is time we will play, "Who said that?" Keeper style. (I will give a quote and the students will have to figure out who said it from the book series.) Homework will be to write a scene that has to happen (in your opinion) in Book 9. Day 5--We will discuss in depth book 8.5 in the Keeper book series. Each student will be given the opportunity to share their scene from book 9. We will discuss themes of the Keeper series, what we want to see happen, and what do we still not know. We will play the Ultimate Keeper Kahoot for all 9 books. If students have taken my trivia classes before, I will use different questions (I can't promise that every single question will be different, but I will try!) for this Ultimate Keeper Kahoot game. Each student will need a Kahoot! account. They will need to log in to Outschool on one device, but for the game to be interactive they will need a second device to play Kahoot. They can open a browser or simply download the app. I will send out the game ID once class has begun. In some classes we may compare and contrast the Keeper books with other popular young adult novels. Some classes may go over the 65 minute time allotment, especially on the baking days.

Other Details
Parental Guidance
This book has some mild violence. Sophie and her friends are helping to fight a war with another group called the Neverseen. They use their special abilities, throwing stars and other weapons to defeat the enemy.
There is also some romance between the characters in this book. Characters hug and hold hands. So far in the book series there has only been one kiss. Two of the characters want to date Sophie, the main character, and there is tension around that situation.
We do discuss some of these situations in our class, so please be aware that these issues may come up. For more guidance about violence and romance in the book series please refer to Common Sense Media.
Supply List
I will have a list of all ingredients for the baking classes out 3 weeks before the start of class.

I fell in love with the first Keeper of the Lost Cities book about 2 years ago and then shared the great story with my 4 daughters. Since then we have read all the books in the series multiple times, listened to the series on Audible, and gone to see Shannon Messenger in person and had her sign several of our books!
I graduated with a BA in English and Spanish for secondary school teaching. I have always loved reading and teaching book studies to students of all ages. I have taught English, Spanish, ESL and religion classes to students ages 7-18 in public school and private settings. I have taught many book studies to ages 8-17 including but not limited to-- The Old Man and the Sea, Revolution is Not a Dinner Party, Where the Red Fern Grows, The Red Badge of Courage, The Great Gatsby, The Outsiders, The Scarlet Letter, Tom Sawyer and others. I am currently teaching a Keeper of the Lost Cities book club on Outschool for ages 10-14. Reading is one of my passions and I love sharing that with my children and my students.
