Week 1Lesson 1Introductions and ASL TermsIntroductions: Students will introduce themselves using ASL, learning basic greetings and personal information signs. ASL Terms: Overview of essential ASL terms, focusing on basic communication.Lesson 2ASL FundamentalsDeaf Terminology: Introduction to key terms and concepts related to Deaf culture and community. Classifiers: Introduction to classifiers, their importance in ASL, and basic usage. Vocabulary List #1: Introduction to the first set of essential vocabulary words.Week 2Lesson 3PerspectivesPerspective in ASL: Understanding how perspective is conveyed in ASL, including spatial referencing. Classifiers (continued): Further practice and expansion on the use of classifiers.Lesson 4Non-Manual MarkersEye Gaze: Exploring the role of eye gaze in ASL communication and its importance in conveying meaning.Week 3Lesson 5Enhancing ASL ProficiencyA creative activity to enhance visual thinking and ASL expression through drawing. ASL Commands: Learning and practicing common ASL commands used in everyday interactions.Lesson 6Glossing ClassifiersIntroduction to the concept of glossing and how classifiers are noted in ASL gloss. Vocabulary List #2: Introduction to the second set of essential vocabulary words.Week 4Lesson 7Navigating Deaf CultureUnderstanding Deaf Culture: In-depth exploration of Deaf culture, including history, traditions, and values. Integrating Skills: Combining all learned skills in practical exercises and activities.Lesson 8Interview Questions PreparationPreparing questions for interviews with members of the Deaf community, focusing on respectful and meaningful interactions.Week 5Lesson 9Refining ASL SkillsExpressive Use of Classifiers: Advanced practice in using classifiers expressively in various contexts.Lesson 10Time and Tense in ASLLearning how to convey time and tense in ASL, including past, present, and future. Frequency: 3-6 throughout the classDetails: Progress will be assessed through the following: • Comprehensive Quiz: This is a comprehension quiz covering the topics that were taught. The quiz will test your ability to understand what is being signed to you. • Expressive Test: You will prepare your own story or song using the vocabulary and grammar structures learned in class. More instructions will be given in class.Grading

During this 6-week class, your learner will use the app Padlet or Flip, Nearpod and Signing Savvy dictionary to complete homework & practice their ASL skills.
