This class will focus on expressive and receptive skills in American Sign Language and American Deaf culture. Prerequisite: American Sign Language for Beginners class or basic ASL knowledge is required.

Class Experience

Beginner - Intermediate Level
12 lessons//6 Weeks
 Week 1
Lesson 1
Introductions and ASL Terms
Introductions: Students will introduce themselves using ASL, learning basic greetings and personal information signs. ASL Terms: Overview of essential ASL terms, focusing on basic communication.
Lesson 2
ASL Fundamentals
Deaf Terminology: Introduction to key terms and concepts related to Deaf culture and community. Classifiers: Introduction to classifiers, their importance in ASL, and basic usage. Vocabulary List #1: Introduction to the first set of essential vocabulary words.
 Week 2
Lesson 3
Perspectives
Perspective in ASL: Understanding how perspective is conveyed in ASL, including spatial referencing. Classifiers (continued): Further practice and expansion on the use of classifiers.
Lesson 4
Non-Manual Markers
Eye Gaze: Exploring the role of eye gaze in ASL communication and its importance in conveying meaning.
 Week 3
Lesson 5
Enhancing ASL Proficiency
A creative activity to enhance visual thinking and ASL expression through drawing. ASL Commands: Learning and practicing common ASL commands used in everyday interactions.
Lesson 6
Glossing Classifiers
Introduction to the concept of glossing and how classifiers are noted in ASL gloss. Vocabulary List #2: Introduction to the second set of essential vocabulary words.
 Week 4
Lesson 7
Navigating Deaf Culture
Understanding Deaf Culture: In-depth exploration of Deaf culture, including history, traditions, and values. Integrating Skills: Combining all learned skills in practical exercises and activities.
Lesson 8
Interview Questions Preparation
Preparing questions for interviews with members of the Deaf community, focusing on respectful and meaningful interactions.
 Week 5
Lesson 9
Refining ASL Skills
Expressive Use of Classifiers: Advanced practice in using classifiers expressively in various contexts.
Lesson 10
Time and Tense in ASL
Learning how to convey time and tense in ASL, including past, present, and future. Vocabulary List #3: Introduction to the third set of essential vocabulary words.
 Week 6
Lesson 11
Interaction with Deaf Community
Communication Practice with Teacher Joseph Keith (Deaf Presenter): Practical communication exercises with a Deaf presenter to enhance real-world ASL skills.
Lesson 12
Unit Wrap Up
Classifier Expressive Assessment: Assessment of students' ability to use classifiers expressively and accurately. ASL Game: Engaging game to reinforce learning and encourage interactive practice among students.
This class is taught in American Sign Language.
1 - 2 hours per week outside of class
Homework
Frequency: 1-2 per week
Feedback: as needed
Details: Homework is completed on Flip & Nearpod each week. Completing the homework is essential to success in this class.
Assessment
Frequency: 3-6 throughout the class
Details: Progress will be assessed through the following: • Comprehensive Quiz: This is a comprehension quiz covering the topics that were taught. The quiz will test your ability to understand what is being signed to you. • Expressive Test: You will prepare your own story or song using the vocabulary and grammar structures learned in class. More instructions will be given in class.
Grading
Frequency: included
Details: Grades are available upon request, but the focus remains on students' pursuit of skill mastery.
Completion of the American Sign Language for Beginners class or equivalent basic ASL proficiency (including familiarity with the manual alphabet, numbers, sentence structure, and basic everyday signs) is required.

I will provide handouts for class. Paper and pencil is required for notes. On Kahoot days an extra device (i.e. tablet or phone) may be needed.
In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
During this 6-week class, your learner will use the app Padlet or Flip, Nearpod and Signing Savvy dictionary to complete homework & practice their ASL skills. 

Flip & Signing Savvy, does not require the learners to set up an account.

Signing Savvy is a free ASL dictionary. Account sign-up is not necessary for usage.
