Beginner Level
** Only students who have taken Intro 1 and HIRAGANA may register for this course ** (Some exceptions may be made for students with prior Japanese knowledge and experience.) In this 6 week (12 lesson) course, students will learn and memorize KATAKANA. This syllabary has the same 46 sounds as HIRAGANA but are written in a simpler way and are used for words that were borrowed from other languages. Students will learn KATAKANA through writing, flash cards, exposure to literature, videos, and art. There are 4 forms of writing in Japan: HIRAGANA (Japan's main syllabary), KATAKANA (primarily for foreign words), KANJI (Chinese characters) and ROMAJI (Roman letters). We will spend each class learning approximately 5 KATAKANA characters.. Students will also learn beginner words that correspond with each word. For example: Week 1a: AIUEO アイウエオ Week 1b: KA KI KU KE KO カキクケコ Week 2a: SA SHI SU SE SO サシスセソ Week 3b: TA CHI TSU TE TO タチツテト Week 4a: NA NI NU NE NO ナニヌネノ Week 4b: HA HI HU HE HO ハヒフヘホ Week 5a: MA MI MU ME MO マミムメモ Week 5b: YA YU YO ヤユヨ Week 6a: RA RI RU RE RO ラリルレロ Week 6b: WA WO N ワヲン Learners will have ample practice in class and the teacher will provide worksheets to further support learning at home. Their Japanese learning experience will be enhanced significantly by learning how to read katakana.

Teacher expertise and credentials

Konnichiwa!
My name is Jasmine.
I have been teaching on Outschool since 2020, and it has been an amazing journey. I have mainly offered Japanese language and culture courses on Outschool, but am excited to now be offering ESL to English language learners all over the world.
I lived in Japan for over sixteen years teaching English and studying Japanese. I raised my oldest son in Japan until he was ten, and my daughters also spent two years in Tokyo studying in a Japanese elementary school. Not only do I have the experience of learning Japanese as a non-native speaker, but I have also supported my own children on their journey of learning English and Japanese as native and second language learners.
As a life-long learner of Japanese, it gives me so much joy to pass on my passion for language and culture to my students. I am an enthusiastic educator who seeks to get to know the individual interests of my students and as well as their learning needs. Being flexible and having fun while also promoting a high standard of learning are some of my greatest strengths as an educator.
Please send me a message if you are interested in the different classes I have to offer and how I can support your student. If you don't see a time that works for your student, please let me know.
Looking forward to hearing from you.
