Class Experience

In this one time class, we will learn how to write the names of a variety of our favorite anime characters. If you're a fan of My Hero Academia, Naruto, Studio Ghibli films like My Friend Tottoro, Princess Mononoke, Doraemon, or others, this may be the class for you.

Japanese has three different alphabets. Two are western style, in that the character conveys a single sound. The third one, however, has a meaning including in each character. Most Japanese names are written using Kanji, which means each name has a specific, special, and sometimes unique meaning that is understood in Japanese but lost when translated to English.

For example, Midoriya, a popular character in My Hero Academia, seems just like sounds to us- but midori means green and ya here means valley, making the name Midoriya green valley. This is fun because we see that Midoriya has green hair! This makes sense to Japanese viewers, who know the meaning, but comes as a pleasant surprise for foreigners.

In this class, we hope to find many other 'Easter eggs' like these as we learn the actual meaning behind our favorite character's names!

Teacher expertise and credentials
After living in Japan for over a year with native Japanese speakers and then spending a year studying Japanese in university, I became fluent in this unique and fun language! I've since spent several years as a Japanese Language Coordinator and have worked as a freelance translator for nearly a decade. All of that to say: I speak Japanese. But more importantly, I LOVE Japanese and all the nuances of their language and culture. Being an isolated island nation, Japan has had the chance to develop things unheard of anywhere in the world, like a written language created by and only used by women, or a language that doesn't have a place for multiples (there is no word for 'apples', just 'apple') ! Between sushi, ninjas, and sumos, everyone seems to know a little bit about Japan and their culture, but in classes with me, you'll learn the language while also learning appreciation for and excitement about a world that is different from anywhere else on the planet.
