NOTE: This class REQUIRES a 3 day per week commitment in order to ensure student progress. Please register for Tuesdays, Wednesdays, AND Thursdays at the same hour in an ongoing fashion. This will reserve your learners' spot for ongoing tutoring.

Instant recognition of sight words is critical because it results in reading fluency. Yet many young readers struggle to remember these types of words. They are sprinkled heavily inside everything we read. From basic words to more advanced . . . an, are, as, but, do, for, has, here, been, every, should, from, like, what, saw, said, were, down, where, because. . . these are just a few. These words appear so often that they are the glue that holds sentences together. Children will have an advantage if they can recognize these words easily on sight!

My 1 on 1 sessions are explicit, sequential, systematic, and multi-sensory. Each lesson includes picture word cards for visual learners; gestures for the kinesthetic learners; and an anchor sentence for auditory learners. Your child may learn best using one or ALL of these methods. In combination, these techniques ensure that all types of learners are successful in learning to read the high frequency words. A schedule of several days per week helps to cement the words in place, and the 1 to 1 format ensures that your child works at THEIR level and pace.

I use a variety of activities and games to strengthen students skills and provide fun interaction during each session. New words are introduced in EACH session using the "SNAP Words' method and materials. Then these words are practiced, played with, written and analyzed for the tricky or irregular phonics. Once an entire list of words is mastered, we practice reading and writing the words in stories !

1 on 1 tutoring in Sight Words is particularly beneficial for very early readers, struggling readers and students with Dyslexia. Each session is tailored to your unique learner. I assess each student at the beginning of our work together and create a program of words just for their needs. I provide a nurturing environment where they can gain confidence while honing their word reading skills. Students earn badges and stickers for their hard work, and create printable charts to show progress and success.

Profile
Teacher expertise and credentials
I am a certified reading specialist with a Masters Degree in reading. I have a strong interest in "how the BRAIN actually learns to read", and during instruction, I teach this to children.
(Most people don't know that our brain is actually NOT wired to read, which is why some children struggle more than others!) My sessions are highly individualized and based on the way each individual students' brain processes sounds and print.

I have taught in a variety of capacities in public schools and universities. These roles include teaching kindergarten/first/or second grade classrooms, and work as a K-5 school Reading Specialist; teaching undergraduate reading courses at the university level; assisting new teachers as a sought after Mentor Teacher; and training teachers in reading programs through school staff development sessions throughout California.

I am now retired from public school teaching, and since 2020 I have enjoyed bringing the joys of reading success to learners on Outschool!
