US Grade 4 - 7
When students enter the Outer Solar System, they encounter a large, magestic sight: the planet Jupiter and its massive Great Red Spot. Students will take a tour of Jupiter, learning basic facts about the planet, including how long a year and a day are, whom Jupiter is named after, as well as why Jupiter is a gas giant. They will also learn about the atmosphere and its composition of gasses, the Galilean moons as well as Jupiter's rings. Students will also learn about the iconic Great Red Spot as well as the Little Red Spot, the Pearls and Jupiter's polar cyclones. They will also learn about the history of the gas giant's exploration from Pioneer 10 to Juno. The class will begin with a warmup, followed by a grand tour of Jupiter, and then a student activity in which students come up with ideas for a space exploration of the planet, its moons, as well as its rings. Students are encouraged to participate in the class by asking questions and sharing their thoughts on Jupiter, space, astronomy, as well as anything related to science and STEM. If they do not feel comfortable sharing verbally, they are free to share on chat if they wish to do so. Students will be able to interact with me and with each other at any point during the class through discussion, asking questions, and sharing insights. Students of all levels of knowledge about Jupiter, space, planets and the Solar System are welcome. All that is required is an interest in space, astronomy, as well as a desire to learn about the largest planet in the Solar System.
Learning Goals
Students will learn basic facts about Jupiter, such as how long it takes for Jupiter to orbit the Sun as well as complete one rotation.
Students will learn about the history of exploration of Jupiter from Pioneer 10 to Juno.
Students will identify the four Galilean Moons of Jupiter.
Students will learn some facts about the Galilean Moons of Jupiter.
Students will identify parts of Jupiter, such as the Great Red Spot and the polar cyclones.
Students will learn about the atmosphere of Jupiter.
Students will learn about how pressure affects the atmosphere of Jupiter.
Other Details
Parental Guidance
Students will use external websites, namely NASA Space Place and NASA Solar System Exploration, to guide their answers to questions relating to ideas for a space mission to Jupiter and/or its moons. Students will be reading about Jupiter and its moons on these sites. Students do not need to have an account for these websites.
Supply List
Pen or pencil and paper should be brought to class for taking notes.
External Resources
In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
