***This class utilizes Super Smash Bros. Ultimate on the Nintendo Switch as well as Nintendo Online. This is the perfect place for learners to practice and play Super Smash Bros for the Nintendo Switch with one another. While this tournament is casual it is also great way to introduce young players to competitive sports and sportsmanship. Students have so many options when they come to play. They can come by to play some head to head matches, they can relax with a 4 person free for all, or they can just come chill out and watch while talking to some new friends. Some weeks we will even have special events like a Pokémon challenge or Custom Stage Week. Instruction is made easy so that every student has the chance to join matches and get into online arenas. We will be using online Battle Arenas for all of our matches. Students will be made comfortable with making and joining online arenas so that they can soon do it independently. Friendlies Throughout our entire meeting, we will be having friendlies taking place. Friendlies are very casual and non competitive format. These are matches that are not in any tournament and are designed for smashers to just play and learn from one another. They may set whatever rules they like. 1v1 Casual Style Tournament For Smashers wanting to compete in the big leagues someday or for Smashers who just want to show their moves, this is the perfect place to do so. Students do not have to compete in these tournaments if they do not want to but if they do then they will be introduced Esports in a fun way designed to promote sportsmanship and an encouraging environment. Ruleset 3 Stocks 7 Minutes - All Items on Medium - Stage Hazards On - No FS Meter - No Spirits - Smashers must choose Random as their stage ALL characters are allowed!
Learning Goals
Students will learn how to create their own Battle Arenas and navigate Smash Bros. Ultimate online. Students will also learn about sportsmanship and how to win/lose like a POGChamp.
Other Details
Parental Guidance
Smash Ultimate is rated for Everyone 10 and up, however the violence depicted is nothing like traditional fighting games. The game is of classic Nintendo characters like Donkey Kong and Kirby battling it out for center stage in a slap stick kind of style. No blood, gore or cussing is ever in the game
Supply List
Students will need a copy of the game Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, a Nintendo Switch, and a subscription to Nintendo Online. Gamecube controllers are recommended but any switch controller will work perfectly. Students do not need to buy any of the DLC content unless they want to.
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Teacher expertise and credentials
I first got my start into Smash Bros when I saw a video of Smash Bros Melee being played as an Esport. Ever since I fallen in love with the game and community. I began hosting tournaments out of my college dorm where we would play the game for hours just talking and learning as much as we can. Now I play Smash Bros. Ultimate which has been very rewarding to play at both a competitive and casual level.
By hosting tournaments and being a part of the Smash community, I keep wanting to find new ways to invite people to play this beautiful game. After hosting and attending smash tournaments, I know the best way to make sure smashers get what they want out of it regardless if it is to get better, meet people, or just relax.
