Class Experience

US Grade Kindergarten - 3
In this 3-part course, young learners will have a blast learning all about archaeology, dig sites, artifacts and more. This course is chock full fun facts, sharing and interaction! Students will alternate between movement activities, video clips, a read-aloud selection, and drawing/building/sculpting challenges related to the theme. Content will be reinforced by these hands-on activities plus interactive discussion, with plenty of time to share their projects and ask questions. The lesson will include information on defining archaeology as a science, and what archaeologists do, some of the tools they use, famous cultural dig sites and the artifacts (treasure!) they discover.
Day 1: What is archaeology, and what are artifacts?
Day 2: Let's dig! How do archaeologists find artifacts, and what do they do with them once they do?
Day 3: Where should we dig first? What are some famous archaeological sites and what can we learn from them?
(No previous experience is necessary. This course is introductory and assumes no prior knowledge of the subject.)
A printer is required for this class. Please message the instructor to make alternate arrangements if you do NOT have access to a printer.

Let's dig into archaeology together!

Learning Goals

This is an introductory course, designed to be developmentally appropriate to primary learners in K-2nd Grades. Students will learn about the science of archaeology and what archaeologists do. Students will be able to identify and compare different tools that archaeologists use to dig and discover artifacts. Students will practice observing and recreating a famous archeological site and artifacts. Students will learn about a broad sampling of ancient cultures we are able to study by examining their artifacts. Students will discuss famous archaeologists, both real and fictional. As we learn about archaeology together, students will also practice developing interpersonal skills, verbal communication, observation, inference, following directions, counting and measuring, replication, color identification, and creative building, drawing and sculpting skills.

Teacher expertise and credentials
I'm excited to learn about the exciting world of archaeology with you--these are real-live treasure hunters! I've been teaching STEAM topics like this one to preschool through middle school for 6 years through an independent STEAM education company, and I'm really looking forward to connecting with new students here on Outschool. I'm also a homeschooling momma of nearly 10 years, with neurodiverse learners at home who have taught me how to approach learning with empathy and a shared sense of wonder first and foremost. Not only will we be learning about archaeology, but we'll sneak in some patterns, numbers and math, comparing and contrasting, observation, movement and more--all things that primary-age students love to learn and practice!
