40 mins in-class hoursClass Experience
This class will be taught through lecture, discussion, visual observation, and hands on creation. First, I will tell the students about Pablo Picasso, allowing students to interject thoughts and questions to create discussion throughout. Together, we will take a look at some of his most famous works from childhood to adulthood, discussing the significance in subject, color, and composition. By examining his lifetime of art, we can see his various styles, artistic genius, and mastery of cubism. Afterward, I will guide students in creating individual, cubist inspired portraits in clay! **Please note- the most famous painting Picasso made was Guernica. Because of the significance in Picasso's life, as well as the historical impact of this piece, it's important that we visit this visual. This painting may be considered inappropriate for some children due to the violent inspiration and nude suggestion (the mother on the left). Please preview this painting beforehand to ensure that your child is fit to take this course, and supervise if and as necessary.
Learning Goals
Students will learn about the life and accomplishments of Pablo Picasso, the significance of his paintings, and how to make their own cubist piece!

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hi! My name is Jen Boden. I live in a small town in rural Pennsylvania and am a proud dog mom to two labs. As an artist and educator, I am passionate about promoting creativity and believe that uninhibited imagination and freedom to express one's unique emotions are essential components in the development of a child, as well as effective academia. It is important to me that each one of my classes are fun and engaging for learners, and I invite all students to see my classes as a safe outlet to be themselves! I strive to incorporate practical color theory, rich art history, and focused discussion into every class to create a well rounded, memorable learning experience!
I hold a Bachelor’s Degree in Studio Art and have acquired a lot of experience in art education, including four years writing and teaching my own art curriculum as a classroom teacher on a Native American Reservation! During this time teaching, I developed a deep appreciation for all cultures and backgrounds, and a true admiration for the diverse artwork created around the world.
Outside of Outschool, I currently teach art classes for my local Community Arts Center, planning lessons for everyone from preschool to retirement! I also write and teach art lessons at a nearby library! I have worked as a freelance painter for years, selling on commission and via small business partnerships. I know the fire and bright, therapeutic effect art can bring during this much needed time in history, and it's my pleasure to share that with every learner.
Every child has so much to offer the art world, and I am would be thrilled to be a part of your child’s creative journey! I hope to meet your little artist soon!

MUTING:
My teaching style encourages student engagement and discussion! Because of this, I typically ask that students remain unmuted during class. However, there will be times when muting may be best for the class, and so parents are welcome to aide in classroom focus by muting their student at their discretion. I may mute students as well if they are disruptive or do not follow the classroom rules established at the beginning of each class (and listed below!)

CLASSROOM RULES:
My classroom rules are simple, as they are instilled only to serve as a gentle reminder of the golden rule, and never to prohibit fun! Below I've listed my classroom rules for you to preview with your learner!
*Always be kind and encouraging.
*Be respectful of the teacher and other learners, and please do not interrupt while someone is speaking.
*Do your best! Even if you think your work is not great, if you did your best it’s exactly what it should be.
*Be yourself! Our unique individuality is what makes art so fun! Never be afraid to be yourself.
*Help each other- even the teacher will need help from time to time :)
*Engage! Be a part of discussion, think about the ideas taught and always feel free to ask more questions.
