Are you ready for adventure?! We will learn about a different iconic hero-type each week--sometimes real, sometimes fictional, but always awesome! We'll explore their history and legends, plus share, create, and imagine together.

Class experience

US Grade Kindergarten - 2
While the main focus of this weekly club will be on allowing young sci-fi, history, and fantasy enthusiasts to share their love of cool characters and good storytelling, we will also be practicing important primary-age social and educational skills as we learn about fact and fiction, and even STEAM concepts. The short "featured character" lesson at the beginning will provide a framework for these discussions and will help the young explorer to build and develop observation, recreation, and communication skills, as well as foster curiosity, wonder, and interest in the world around them, big and small, real and imagined. The field guide will serve as a fun keepsake and reference for future study and reflection.
I'm so excited to share my love of fantasy, science fiction, legends, and storytelling with you! I've been teaching STEAM and social studies topics like this one to preschool through middle school for 8 years through an independent STEAM education company, and I'm really looking forward to connecting with new students here on Outschool. Not only will we be learning about all different "Adventurer Archetypes"--but we'll sneak in some science, engineering, colors, numbers and math, comparing and contrasting, observation, movement, communication skills and more--all things that preK-through-2nd graders love to learn and practice! Best of all, your child will have the opportunity to share, share, share all of their favorite facts and stories!
Homework Offered
Occasional extension activities or videos may be provided between meetings, but are always optional and will not affect in-class participation. Students who wish to complete these extra activities will be encouraged to share them virtually in the classroom posts or during the "show and tell" portion of our weekly live meeting.
Assessments Offered
Grades Offered
Access to a printer is required for this class. Weekly files will be posted in the classroom prior to the start of class.
A sketchbook, preferably spiral bound for ease of use (can lay flat when opened), at least 8.5X11 inches or larger, with a side-by-side format if possible.
Colored pencils, crayons, markers.
Pencil and eraser.
Scissors and glue.
Other creative materials may occasionally be requested, such as plastic construction bricks or similar building toys, clay, playdough, or other building/making supplies.
Extension activities may require additional materials, but will mostly be easy-to-find, common household items, and are never required. Any additional weekly supplies will be posted in the classroom prior to the week's lesson.
All material will be presented in a sensitive, age-appropriate manner. The approach will be light-hearted, fun, and often silly. The emphasis will be on what these characters look like, their main features and skills, kid-friendly stories, legends, and fairy tales where we find them, and a bit of historical and geographical context to help us understand their origins.

I strive to be inclusive in all of my classes. Please contact me if you have any specific concerns, as I am very open to feedback and adjustment.

Regarding supplies/activities:
Movement activities are basic in nature (animal moves, etc) but please be sure to provide adult supervision if you feel it is necessary. Participation in movement activities is no required. Please contact the teacher with any concerns.

Allergy Note: Playdough may contain wheat, which could cause an allergic reaction if ingested in those sensitive to wheat gluten or with Celiac disease. I am happy to provide a recipe for gluten-free playdough upon request, or suggest alternative supplies.
Please provide adult assistance with cutting/scissor-use as needed per the parents' discretion and child's ability.
