US Grade Pre-Kindergarten - 1
Watch your child's delight and imagination come alive as we explore some of fantasy's most beloved creatures. What child hasn't imagined meeting a mermaid at the beach, or a unicorn in a magical forest? We will practice creating, sharing and other important primary social and educational skills through the captivating lens of these enchanting, fabled friends. This is an introductory course specially created for PreK, Kindergarten and 1st grade students. At this age, children learn best through play and hands-on activities. They are also developing social skills and love to practice sharing and communicating their ideas. The subject matter will be adapted to suit preschool/primary educational and developmental levels. Students will learn through a variety of approaches, such as read aloud stories, informative slides and graphics, drawing, building and sculpting, movement activities, video clips, games, discussion, rhymes, repetition and more. Students will learn about a variety of adventure-themed social studies topics, which all center on popular make-believe themes. Through imaginative play and short lessons, games, drawing, building, sculpting and discussion, students will develop STEAM skills such as observation, problem-solving, critical thinking, communication, building/drawing/sculpting and more. Math and science concepts are interwoven into lessons. Vocabulary words and concepts such as mythology, fiction, fantasy, legend, dragon, medieval, hoard, fairy, faerie-folk, storytelling, unicorn, woodland, tales, maiden, magic, mermaid, siren, Atlantis, fairy tales, folklore and more will be introduced and used during these interactive, engaging lessons. NOTE: The approach to these fantasy themes will be light-hearted, fun, and often silly. The emphasis will be on what these creatures look like and their main features, modern and traditional fairy tales where we find them, and creating fun, kid-friendly versions through a variety of crafts and projects. The weekly course topics will be: Week 1 --Fairies Week 2 -- Mermaids Week 3 -- Dragons Week 4 -- Unicorns Each week will include: Lesson material presented in slides, a short video clip, a movement activity related to the weekly theme, a read-aloud from a related book, class discussion, 1-2 drawing/building/sculpting activities, and sharing. Some learning games may also be included. Students will also have the opportunity to share their optional homework assignment (from the previous class) with their fellow students. *****Because this class is for 4-6 year olds, I encourage parents to remain available during class to help with technical or learning issues whenever possible (not mandatory). You may not remain on-camera per outschool policy, but it is helpful if you can remain close by during class. I find this creates the best experience for the families who have taken my classes.*****
Learning Goals
Students will explore the difference between fact and fiction. Students will learn about the storytelling role of magical and enchanted creatures in fantasy and fiction. Students will learn about medieval-era dragons. Students will learn about fairies and wee-folk. They will also discover myth-based mermaids and the legend of Atlantis.. They will discuss whether they believe unicorns exist and laern about their history and legends. Students will learn new vocabulary words related to the topic as well as interesting new facts. Students will observe and recreate many of these concepts in hands-on building/drawing/sculpting activities and projects, and through games and in-class discussion.

Supply List
Printable materials will be provided before each class. Access to a printer is required--however, if you do not have one, please reach out so that the teacher can work on a solution with you. (We will make it work!) Students should provide their own paper, pencil, colored pencils or crayons, playdough or sculpting clay, building blocks such as lego-style bricks, duplos, bristle blocks, or wooden blocks. Some additional materials may be used for in-class projects and the optional homework assignments, but they will be simple, easily found, household items, and will be communicated a week prior to the class when they are needed. I am always happy to help families find an alternative material that can be adapted to use in class if any of these items are not available.

I'm so excited to share my love of fantasy, and embark on this exciting adventure with you! I've been teaching STEAM through fun, engaging topics like these to preschool through middle school for 6 years through an independent STEAM education company, and I'm really looking forward to connecting with new students here on Outschool. Not only will we be learning about dragons, monsters, seas creatures, aliens and more--but we'll sneak in some colors, numbers and math, comparing and contrasting, observation, movement and more--all things that preK, kindergartners and 1st graders love to learn and practice!
