Learning vowel teams and word families are essential to your learner becoming a superstar reader. Vowel teams are when several letters come together to make one vowel sound like "oo" in cool, spoon, and tooth or "igh" in sigh, night, and flight. Word families are words that end with the same letters and sounds. Words in -at family are cat, bat, mat, and sat. Words in the -in family would be pin, tin, and pin. Each week we will focus on a different word family or vowel team. I will introduce some words that have the sounds that we are focusing on. Then, as a class with each child getting a turn, we will go through some real and nonsense words to practice using these new sounds. We will play a quick game to review our new sounds. Finally, we will read sentences that have words with the session's sounds and end class with the students writing a sentence that uses a word that has that session's vowel team or word family. This class meets twice a week either on Tuesday and Thursday or Wednesday and Friday. Week of 9/10: -at words Week of 9/17: ee words Week of 9/24: -in words Week of 10/1: oo words Week of 10/8: NO CLASS Week of 10/15: -ug words Week of 10/22: -oa words Week of 10/29: sh- words Class will be paused after the first week of June and not meet over the summer. We will resume and cycle back to the beginning after Labor Day.
