I am a certified reading specialist with a Masters Degree in reading. I have a strong interest in "how the BRAIN actually learns to read", and I base my instruction on teaching this to children. (Most people don't know that our brain is actually NOT wired to read!) I have taught in a variety of capacities in public schools and universities. These roles include teaching kindergarten/first/or second grade classrooms, and work as a K-5 school Reading Specialist; teaching undergraduate reading courses at the university level; assisting new teachers in the role of Mentor Teacher; and training teachers in reading programs through school staff development sessions throughout California. I am now retired from public school teaching and enjoy bringing the joys of reading success to learners through Outschool!
Students will practice their connected reading skills and sight words by practicing the stories or word lists taught during each session.
Supply list: * dry erase marker (the thin, but not extremely fine point, kind) * eraser for dry erase marker (this can be a rolled up old sock) * several sheet protector pockets that you can slip an 8x11 paper into (this will serve as an erasable "white board" substitute to place the daily lined writing paper into as well as a pocket for resource sheets). * Access to a printer for printing writing pages and story sheets that I will send you. If you don't have a printer, please let me know and we will figure out something. * A notebook or folder to keep story sheets in * Index sized cards (for Beginning Level flash cards only)
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Assessment is embedded into the SIPPS program and is used to determine next steps in instruction.
