Class Experience

Jump Into Spelling is an interactive small-group class. By developing strong phonological awareness and phonics skills, students will become stronger readers and writers. Phonological awareness includes the ability to hear and manipulate the sounds in words. Learning how to crack the phonics code not only helps students decode (read) unfamiliar words. It also helps students to spell unknown words and improve their writing skills.

Every week students will:
-Develop phonological awareness skills by playing listening games
- Learn new digraphs or a spelling/phonics rule
-Practice these skills by writing phrases that are examples of our new spelling rule

*Some sections meet twice a week for one month and others meet once a week for 2 months. Please double check your meeting times*

Day 1: Learn how to segment word sounds and review short vowels
Day 2: Digraphs ch, sh and th
Day 3: Hearing and spelling consonant blends
Day 4: Words beginning with the /k/ sound
Day 5: Words ending in ck or k
Day 6: Floss rule- words ending in double ff, ll and ss
Day 7: Spelling compound words
Day 8: Making words plural: add -s or -es

Please note that students will need a white board and marker (or paper and marker) to fully participate
