Judo 101: Martial Art Movement, Character Building, & Fun

In this class, students will be introduced to the basic philosophies of the Japanese martial art, judo, including self-defense, physical fitness, and good character.

Class experience

Students will learn the basic movements required for judo in addition to key vocabulary words and concepts of the sport.
Judo is a Japanese martial art that involves many throwing and grappling techniques and requires lots of practice. I am a third-degree black belt, have done judo for over 20 years, have taught judo for over 10 years, and am a certified master instructor through the United States Judo Federation. In addition, throughout the pandemic, I have taught judo virtually multiple times a week for kids and adults. I have also led national workshops and clinics online.
Students should attend dressed in comfortable clothes that they can move in and have a space large enough for them to safely lay down, run in place, and swing their legs and arms to practice techniques.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Please note that this is an active and engaging class. Judo involves throws, pins, falls, and lots of exercises and as with any activity, there is a risk for injury if movements are not done properly. It is important that students have an open space free of potential tripping hazards such as toys or pets. We will also be on the ground so it is recommended that students have a carpet, rug, or yoga mat to work on. Students should bring a water bottle and dress in comfortable clothes. Depending on each person's practice space, it is the parents' discretion whether closed-toed shoes or barefoot is the best option. In addition, students will be reminded to "listen to their bodies" and will be given cues on how to do exercises and techniques properly to avoid injury but parents should support students in making sure they move in a way that is best for them. Lastly, while this class is not designed around contact judo, we will learn techniques that would traditionally be done with a partner. Students will be reminded to only use judo in a judo class and/or for self-defense, but it is important to reinforce that judo is not a game and should not be done unsupervised.
