This class is for students interested in learning about Japan. We will review important information but also unique aspects that are not as well known about this country's culture. The class is structured as a lecture with key information to discuss as a group as we review it. I encourage students to share their experiences, thoughts and opinions of any information reviewed. We will cover the following topics: 1) Basic statistics 2) Symbols 3) Traditions 4) Ideology (key points) 5) Cultural Aspects 6) Daily Life 7) Habits 8) Inventions 9) Fun Facts 10) What surprised me? (as a foreign living in Japan) A PowerPoint presentation will be used with highlighted bullet points and pictures to aid with learning. Information comes from reputable resources and also I share my personal experiences as I lived in Japan. Please note that the intent of the class is to teach students various types of information about Japan so the teacher will do most of the talking while encouraging students to discuss the information or ask questions as we go. Therefore, this is not an interactive class but can be a discussion-driven class for students that like participating. No prior knowledge about Japan is needed but this class may be more suitable to students that show some interest in Japan or are interested in social studies.
Learning Goals
Students will have a good understanding of Japan's geography, traditions, history, and culture at the completion of class.
