*Please note, I am not currently offering this class in this format. I re-created this class as an ongoing class that meets every week. Check out that listing at https://outschool.com/classes/around-the-world-with-mr-clark-A5YGdgnx#usQ4WOXRMZ -- Each week we travel to a new destination. We learn about a new place as if we were planning a trip to that location. We start with some basic questions. Is it in the Northern or Southern Hemisphere? The East or West? What's the line that divides the Northern and Southern Hemispheres? What's the line that divides the Eastern and Western Hemispheres? What continent? What language is predominantly spoken? Are we flying into a large metropolitan area or a remote location? How will we get around? What type of money is used. Do we need a VISA or will a passport be sufficient? What are VISA requirements? What is the culture we are stepping into? What would be good to know before we get there so we don't needlessly offend someone? What will we want to see while we are there, and why or how have these sites become important? Who are some important figures in the history of this destination? What are natural wonders unique to this area and what wildlife might we expect to see? What is the climate and what should we pack for our hypothetical trip? What are we going to eat? What foods are customary? Each week as we journey to a new destination, that location makes sense based on where we were the previous week. We might travel to India from England, because of the historic ties between those countries, or from China to Mongolia because of the geographic proximity. If we were going to visit Antarctica, we'd go a place like Argentina the week before as a "launching off point" for Antarctica. Classes typically include discussion as we work through basic questions to prepare or trip, a "story" about important places or figures in the destination's history, and short videos about the location.
Learning Goals
Students will develop a good understanding of global geography, historic trade routes, political ties and colonization. Why is Spanish predominantly spoken in Central America? Because it was colonized by Spain. Why is Portuguese spoken in Brazil? Same answer. French in Morocco? That's an interesting one...
This is a true social studies course in how it is interdisciplinary. We cover geography, history, culture, religion, political structures, natural wonders and wildlife, foods. What would you want to do if you went to Rio de Janeiro or Tokyo or the Gobi Desert? These will be the things we talk about as we go to those places.
Over time, the kids will be exposed to lots of different cultures, religions, political structures. They'll have a sense for where these places are in the world. They'll learn tips and clues for finding different places on a map.

Teacher expertise and credentials
I love travel and if I have not been there yet, it's on my list! I've traveled to and have lived abroad in seventeen different countries. Much of what we do each week is the same type of research I would do on a destination before I would travel to that country.
