Description
Class Experience
Students will develop a regular writing practice which encourages improved idea formation, writing confidence, and overall writing skill. Students will expand their critical thinking abilities and learn introspection. Students will learn new ways to understand, explore, and regulate their own emotions.
As a licensed Intervention Specialist, teaching students social skills, emotional regulation, and behavioral modification is part of my expertise. Social-emotional growth is often overlooked in many curriculum, but I've always been fortunate enough to have the opportunity to teach these skills to students throughout my career. Combining writing and social-emotional learning has proven to be an amazing way to help students develop both their academic skills and their personal/interpersonal ones.
There is no mandatory homework in this class. Students are encouraged to keep a journal that they write in regularly.
I highly recommend students purchase a journal. There are several low-cost options available on Amazon and other online sites. Every child is different, but I've noticed students commit more to the practice of daily journaling when they can choose a journal they like! While I recommend this, it is NOT required for this class.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
There is no assessment in this class.
40 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 0 - 1 hours per week outside of class.
This class is intended to provide students with a variety of journaling methods and options to help them explore the skill while also exploring their own thoughts and emotions. All class activities are science-based strategies that are age-appropriate and have been utilized by myself in the classroom setting as interventions for 11-15 year old students.
