Class Experience

Kids love to tell jokes, and they love to get laughs! Yes, this class will be fun, but it will also support students' reading, comprehension, and speaking skills.
Learners who enroll in this class will be working on several language arts components such as:
--Phonics (Decoding the words in the joke; practice sounding out unfamiliar words)
--Comprehension (Why is the joke funny?)
--Fluency (Reading and then reciting the joke with expression and understanding)
--Speaking and Listening (confidence in front of a group, listening attentively to others)
Learners will be walked through a presentation each week explaining the focus for that session. Learners will have a list of jokes they can choose from to practice with the group. These jokes will NOT be in the presentation, so everyone can be surprised at the punch lines!
Jokes week 1: Practice joke telling strategies: Pausing for effect; how to deliver the "punch line."
Jokes week 2: Knock Knock Jokes
Jokes week 3: Question and Answer Jokes
Jokes week 4: Tongue Twisters
Jokes week 5: Joke-A-Thon - Spin the wheel and tell a joke! Learners will use the list of jokes they have received, or they can come with their own jokes to tell.

Each learner will receive a unique set of jokes every week. In this way, every participant will be able to get their own laughs!
Week 1: A list of simple jokes
Week 2: Knock Knock jokes
Week 3: Question and Answer Jokes
Week 4: Tongue Twisters
Week 5: Joke-a-Thon: Bring your lists for the last four weeks!

Learning Goals

Students learn the importance of understanding a joke before telling it. They will practice speaking in front of peers and using expression to get their message across. This will include using phonics skills (reading the joke), comprehension skills (determine its meaning and WHY it is funny), practicing reading and speaking fluency (reading and reciting the joke with natural and meaningful expression), and listening skills.

Teacher expertise and credentials
I have taught lessons on speaking and listening in grades K-6 for many years. I find that students enjoy having fun while learning to be comfortable speaking to others, and they enjoy listening to their peers when it involves a fun activity. Jokes are the perfect vehicle for learning these important skills.
