Description
Class Experience
There sure are a lot of Jewish holidays! Taught by a teacher with an MA in Jewish Studies, this intensive boot camp introduces students to the major Jewish holidays and festivals, with an emphasis on the story behind each holiday, as well as the foods and cultural traditions related to each one. Some classes will include culturally relevant songs or music. Students will participate through active listening and in-class discussion. This interactive, secular and inclusive class is open to...
•. Students will learn about the origins of various holidays and traditions • Students will hear and understand stories related to Jewish holidays • Students will learn about the holiday traditions children celebrate in the United States, and around the world • Students will have a chance to casually interact with peers around a shared learning goal • Students will practice using their listening skills and (time permitting) their speaking skills
I have an MA in Jewish Studies from the University of Indiana-Bloomington, and have completed several other academic Jewish Studies and Religious Studies classes, at the graduate level. I was raised Jewish, and I taught Hebrew school for several years.I understand the difference between approaching a topic from an academic, secular viewpoint, and a religious one. All students are welcome in this class.

2 hours 20 minutes per week in class, and maybe some time outside of class.
Many holiday related stories include potentially disturbing or frightening topics such as fighting, battles, exile, death, birth, plagues, hanging, weapons, famine, drought and capital punishment. I do not focus on these aspects excessively or go into gory detail, but these themes are part of many of the holiday stories, and may also come up in class discussion. This is a secular and inclusive class about Jewish holidays and cultural traditions. All students are welcome. No prior knowledge is required. This class covers some of the material covered in the ongoing class I teach about Jewish holidays and traditions.
