US Grade 5 - 8
In this ongoing course, learners will get to experience the history, cultural impact, and lore of some of Japan's mythology and mythical creatures. This class will contain lecture-style introduction of the week's myth, as well as ample group conversation and discussion facilitated by me. I strive to teach about these topics in a way that is age appropriate, but does credit and justice to the culture in which they originate. I will also include mention of any other countries with similar myths to allow for discussion around how myths spread, how folklore adapts depending on culture and language, and what similarities can be seen between Eastern and Western mythology. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Schedule **please note that this schedule has the potential to evolve, and may be altered or changed** Week of October 24th, Week 1: The Creation Myth Week of October 31st, Week 2: The Two Frogs Week of November 7th, Week 3: The Mirror of Matsuyama Week of November 14th, Week 4: Momotaro: The Little Peachling Week of November 21st, Week 5: The Stonecutter Week of November 28th, Week 6: Kitsune: The Nine-Tailed Fox Week of December 5th, Week 7: Tsukumogami: Anthropomorphic Household Goods Week of December 12th, Week 8: Shikigami: Spirits Who Do Tasks

Learners who are more sensitive or who feel scared easily may benefit from a preview of the myths general idea with an adult prior to class starting. Please bear in mind that any inappropriate or explicit material will not be covered. If adults have questions about what content will be included any given week, they are encouraged to reach out to me directly.
Students are encouraged to skip or leave any meetings early that make them feel nervous or uncomfortable.
