What's included

40 live meetings
36 hrs 40 mins in-class hours
Homework
1-2 hours per week. Learners will be expected to complete a "Checkpoint" each week (through Google Forms) prior to the next lesson's meeting time. The link for the assignment will be posted in the classroom following each *first* lesson of the week. These Checkpoint assignments must be completed in order to get credit for them toward a Certificate of Completion or a Certificate of Excellence.
Mastery Evaluation
It is recommended that learners who are wishing to master the Japanese writing system of hiragana and katakana more quickly take advantage of the additional post made after the second lesson of each week that includes a hiragana or katakana practice video. Learners can download a writing practice sheet in the classroom for this purpose or utilize other means as desired.
Assessment
Learners will be expected to complete a "Mastery Check" quiz through Google Forms each week prior to the next lesson's meeting time. The link for the quiz will be posted in the classroom following each *second* lesson of the week. It is important that learners score 80% or higher in on these order to get credit for them toward a Certificate of Completion or Excellence. Quizzes can be repeated without penalty if desired, provided it is repeated *before* the following week's lesson, with the final score being counted toward their overall progress.
Certificate of Completion
Learners who complete 18 out of 20 of the Checkpoint assignments, as well as all 20 out of 20 of the Mastery Check quizzes (see the "Assessment" section) and score 80% or higher on at least 18 out of the 20 will receive a Certificate of Completion for the course. Furthermore, learners who complete all of the Mastery Check quizzes, make 80% or higher on all 20 out of 20 quizzes, and reach "Black Belt" status by completing and making at least 80% on all of the Checkpoint assignments will also receive a Certificate of Excellence in addition to their Certificate of Completion.

Parental Guidance
Note: Parental consent for use of Blooket and Nearpod for purposes of content review is assumed granted unless expressed directly to the teacher otherwise. It is important to help students keep in mind that more difficult languages such as Japanese require effort and diligence to master. According to the Foreign Service Institute (FSI), Japanese ranks as a Category V language among world languages in the highest level of difficulty (based on average time of acquisition) alongside Chinese, Korean, and Arabic. Learners of these languages often require approximately 2200 hours of use and study to reach conversational fluency. (Source: https://2009-2017.state.gov/m/fsi/sls/orgoverview/languages/index.htm) As enjoyable as it is to learn Japanese, it can also be challenging and even downright frustrating at times to achieve confidence. Please support them where necessary by reminding them of this fact and, if possible, finding creative solutions together toward continually rediscovering the fun and magic of this language. Need suggestions? Try looking through manga or watching an anime show together, or perhaps even practicing some basic phrases at the dinner table, to inspire and reinvigorate them when the going gets tough. And, as always, feel free to reach out to me for additional support at any time.

Details:

Kelsey studied Japanese language, culture, history, and economics both at home (Gustavus Adolphus College in Minnesota) and a year abroad (Kansai Gaidai University in Osaka, Japan). He returned to Japan after graduating to live for another three years in Kagawa prefecture, Shikoku, where he worked in language instruction and Japanese-English translation. He attained certification in the 2nd highest level of the internationally recognized Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT) less than three years into his Japanese studies.

Kelsey's teaching experience in language instruction (where he often implements the Natural Approach and TPR) continues to this day in private lessons for both children and adults in various subjects including Japanese language learning and JLPT test prep. For Japanese, this includes literacy in kanji and the language's other character sets, as well as comprehension and production in both informal and business-level conversation.

Regarding the JLPT specifically, Kelsey's tutoring methods involve a top-down approach to deconstructing, studying for, and tackling the JLPT for those students looking to take their Japanese to the next level and even get this important certification that can land them a job abroad. Feel free to contact him for more information about the JLPT and suggestions on whether or not it may be right for your learner's language goals.
