Class Experience

IMPORTANT: Due to low enrollments in the live classes, I encourage you to consider taking the “flex” version of this class. It contains the same content and can be taken on a flexible schedule. What’s more, I offer a “pay what you can” discount for all flex classes! Just sign up for the class and then send a message requesting your preferred discount. Here’s a link to the flex version of this course:

▬▬▬▬▬▬ COURSE SUMMARY ▬▬▬▬▬▬

This course explores over 60 Pokemon and their origins in Japanese mythology and culture. Students will learn about cultural traditions that have inspired Pokemon, and a plethora of Japanese of myths and legends that are the basis for other popular Pokemon. While the focus of this class will be the culture/mythology of Japan, it is through the lens of the Pokemon world, and thus is not a comprehensive review of the entirety of Japanese culture, folklore, or mythology.

Students will also have the opportunity to create a Pokemon that is inspired by a Yokai (one that hasn't been made into a Pokemon yet). Instructions will be given in Week 3, and presentations will be at the beginning of class in Week 4.

▬▬▬▬▬▬ SCHEDULE REQUESTS ▬▬▬▬▬▬

I create my entire teaching schedule based on schedule requests, so if you don't see a time that works for you, please put in a request! However, I can only teach live classes from 9 AM to 4 PM Arizona time. If you need to watch the class outside that time period, you can enroll in the “flex” version of this class and watch the recordings at your leisure! Here is the link:

Parental Guidance
Not recommended for sensitive souls! Some of these Japanese monsters are quite creepy. There are some stories with death, destruction, and one mention of suicide. (I would let my own 7 and 11 year olds take this class, but there are other kids in this age range who probably wouldn't appreciate the creepiness of it all.)

🎓 𝐐𝐮𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐟𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 🎓
From 2005 to 2021 I was a highly certified teacher in Arizona, in Science, Language Arts, and Social Studies. (I allowed my teaching license to lapse after becoming employed by the University of Arizona.) I have a Bachelor of Science in Earth and Space Science Education. I have four children ranging from 9 to 14 years of age. Besides teaching on Outschool, I am an advisor and educational outreach coordinator at the University of Arizona, and I also run my own small business giving astronomy shows in an inflatable planetarium for libraries and schools. In my spare time, I like to hike with my family, go on road trips, and volunteer with the Crisis Text Line (an organization that helps at-risk teens and young adults work through difficult situations).

Most of my classes come with projects or extension activities your child can do at home. Because every family situation is different, all of these activities and assignments are optional and at the discretion of the parent.
