MATERIAL COVERED A student can request to cover one or more of any of the following topics in a tutoring session: -Greetings -Self introductions -How to talk about family -How to talk about likes and dislikes -How to talk about possession or the existence of living and non-living things (example: Do you have a dog? Do you have a book?) -Discuss future plans or past activities -Vocabulary and grammar found in favorite anime or manga -Reading, writing or typing kanji, hiragana, and katakana CLASS FORMAT A 50-minute session has the following basic format: The first 20 to 25 minutes involves introducing learners to new vocabulary and phrases, explaining grammar, practicing pronunciation, and drilling to help students develop their ability to respond quickly to Japanese verbal cues. If a student has taken a tutoring session in the past, part of this time can also be used to review material from that previous session. The middle 10 to 15 minutes covers reading, writing and listening exercises. Real world use of the Japanese will be demonstrated and reading/listening exercises will be facilitated with the use of video games that have been released in Japanese, as well as manga, anime, textbooks, Japanese websites, and Google Earth and Maps. I will do live writing demonstrations from my computer screen for students to be able to practice the proper stroke order of Japanese characters along with me. The last 20 to 25 minutes of class will be a review of the material covered in the first 20 to 25 minutes, solidifying proper pronunciation and quick response. HOMEWORK Homework is assigned at the end of class as a way of practicing the material covered during that session. Other than printing the provided handout, learners DO NOT have to prepare or study for any future sessions, nor is there an expectation to enroll in additional tutoring sessions. Feel free to ask any questions or concerns you may have. *Note: Any messages sent to me on Sunday will be seen and replied to on Monday morning, so messages are best sent on or before Saturday.

Parental Guidance
Parents: Please let me know how to pronounce your child's first and last name so we can convert their name appropriately to Japanese.
If you have a Japanese, Korean, or Chinese last name, if you happen to know the Chinese character(s) associated with your last name and/or first name, let me know so we can convert it to the appropriate Kanji.
Supply List
Free printable handouts with vocabulary, phrases, and writing practice will be made available several days before the start of each session. No outside materials or purchases will be necessary. Having a working printer is not necessary for this class, but the ability to print the handouts will help to make learning easier and more engaging. For the very first lesson, please print the handout titled "Classroom Phrases".

Teacher expertise and credentials
I’m offering this class because I love languages. My three years of Japanese study at UCLA as well as my four years living abroad in Japan as an English teacher have prepared me with the passion and skill-set that make me the ideal Japanese teacher for beginners.
I will be sharing with students the same techniques that my native-Japanese friends and teachers have used to help me get quickly past the hurdles that tend to slow down most beginners.
My teaching approach is extremely visual. I love pictures and illustrations and slideshows.
Like playing a sport or musical instrument, Japanese conversation in my class is learned from drilling and repetition until correct responses are given automatically, quickly, and naturally with little or no thinking.
