Class Experience

During this single session, 1 hour class, students will create a drawing of a luminous goldfish, swimming against a patterned backdrop. This fish drawing is inspired a painting created by the Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama.

Students will learn about organic shapes as they follow along with the instructor's guided drawing of the fish before creating a patterned background which is characteristic of Kusama's work. The instructor will demonstrate how to build up color layers using color pencils as well as how to use a "scumbling" technique to create the texture of the fish scales in the drawing.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hello there! I have been an artist and art teacher for over 30 years. I teach parent & child, elementary, teen and adult art classes and programs using a wide range of materials and techniques. I have a B.F.A. and M.F.A. in fine arts and enjoy painting, drawing and mixed media like mosaics and clay. I offer guided drawings, step by step lessons and encourage creative curiosity. I encourage students to bring their own unique perspective to their work so they can express their own ideas with no pressure. There is no one way to create art.
