US Grade 2 - 5
In this class, learners will learn about Dr. Jane Goodall, along with Jane Goodall's Roots & Shoots program. Roots & Shoots is the global youth program of the Jane Goodall Institute, and was founded by Dr. Jane Goodall with a group of students from Tanzania. This class introduces a service learning campaign project to the learners that can easily be accomplished with family and friends, even while social distancing in place. The service campaign project will positively affect the learners' communities, the environment, and animals, as exhibited in similar Roots & Shoots campaigns all over the globe. Dr. Jane Goodall believes that the youth is important in creating a change in our world, and this class empowers learners to make a positive change through compassion and action. When learners complete their service campaign, they can send a picture of them doing the project to me, the teacher, through the Outschool platform. To celebrate a job well done in completing their project, learners will receive a certificate showing they have made a difference and completed their service learning campaign. After attending this class, learners are able to be a part of Roots & Shoots by uploading their certificate and project(s) in the Roots & Shoots website - rootsandshoots.org - to inspire others. Please note that registration (which is free!) is required to upload and share on the Roots & Shoots website. Thank you! Teacher expertise and credentials
Bachelor's Degree in Science from Texas A&M University
Hi, I'm Teacher Kim! I have a Bachelor’s degree in Animal Science, and over 10 years of experience in informal education. This includes teaching at the National Aquarium in Baltimore and Disney's Animal Kingdom. I hold certifications for “Jane Goodall's Roots & Shoots Compassionate Leadership through Service Learning” and “Project WILD”. I am also a Homeschooling mom!
I enjoy teaching children and seeing how they learn, be empowered, and succeed. My goal is to teach in a fun, patient, inclusive and positive environment. I believe that it is important to introduce environmental conservation at a young age in order to help empower the individual in protecting nature and our planet.
Outside the classroom, I enjoy spending time with my family, exploring nature, yoga, traveling, dancing, and SCUBA Diving. Conservation and education are some of my passions, and the classroom is a great way for me to share that with you! I look forward to meeting you. See you in the classroom soon!
