ames and the Giant Peach was one of Roald Dahl's first children's stories. Published in 1961 it follows the story of young James and his two terrible aunts. His life changes with the help of some magic beans, a peach tree and an interesting group of insects. This course will be fun for students new to this book, or long time fans. Day 1 - Habitats In this basic STEM lesson we will look at insects and discuss their habitats. Day 2 - Insect classifications In this basic STEM lesson we will learn more details about the insects that we meet in the book. We will learn the difference between insects, arachnids and myriapods. Day 3 - Writing and descriptions In this lesson we will look at the unlikely friendship between James and the centipede. Students will interview classmates and write about their partners. Day 4 - Geography In this lesson we will look for clues to find out where Aunt Spiker and Aunt Sponge live. We will also label the continents and the oceans on a world map. Day 5 - Writing In this English lesson we will create our own story. In our stories there will be a beginning, middle and an end with at least 2 problems and solutions along the way. The course is student lead. I like to follow the interests of the student, therefore there might be some deviation from this syllabus depending on each group.
Learning Goals
Students will be inspired by the story, have opportunities to discuss and interact with other students, and learn about writing, insects, and geography.
