My learners and I have had a great time with each other all year in my full-year academic courses. Now that it's summer, we still want to see each other and have fun, but we don't want to work. I love "Jackbox Games." They promote critical and creative thinking, are a lot of fun, and make you laugh. I also love game nights. So, this summer I will be running a Jackbox game night (or day) once or twice a week. Then when fall gets here, depending on how things go, maybe I run a couple a month. I have a great group of learners. Come in and hangout with friends, make some new ones, and laugh along the way. We will play some of my favorites and try ones that I have never played before. If you don't know Jackbox, it is pretty simple. As the game host, I download it and share it on screen. Students then follow the link and answer the questions on their device (a secondary device is recommended). There are 10 party packs and 35 games to choose from. Most games allow 6-8 players, plus an audience that also gets to vote. Since this class allows up to 18 learners, we are going to have to do things a bit differently. Much of this will depend on student feedback, but I have played in large groups before. Sometimes we play in heats or sometimes as teams, but we'll figure it out. Whatever works best for the room. As mentioned before, due to the nature of gameplay, students are encouraged to have a secondary device such as a phone or tablet, but if their computer screen is large enough, that will work too. Also, please be advised that the class is listed as an hour and fifteen minutes, but this is a social class after all, so the time may vary. I imagine there will be days when we want to keep playing or just hang out and talk after the games are done.
Other Details
Parental Guidance
Students are told to keep everything "Outschool Appropriate," however, these are teenagers we are talking about. Plus, I am old by comparison, so I may not understand their young language and references, just like they don't always understand mine. Many of the games have very open-ended answers, so I expect some be a strange, dark, or filled with innuendo.
Some games are also a little crude or dark by nature (Murder Mystery Party), making them a bit more PG-13. Parents should look into Jackbox a little first just to make sure they are comfortable with the games and the host (I don't mean Mr. J.).
Supply List
A secondary device such as a phone or tablet is highly recommended; however, a large enough computer screen will also work.
