Description

Class Experience

Students will be able to define: Buoyancy, Hypothesis, Energy, Wheel, and Axle. The class lays the foundation for future science classes by introducing a simplified version of the scientific process and familiarizing young learners with basic terms.
Ms. Brenda loves science and enjoys learning about science for fun. She studied Geology at Mesa Community College, received certificates in Anatomy and Physiology at Southwest Institute of Healing Arts, completed an Astronomy and Cosmology course on Khan Academy, and is currently working her way through a Physics course on Khan Academy.
There is no homework for this class but some activities may require more than the allotted class time to complete.
Week One -4-6 small items that can be placed in the water. Items might include; a pencil, a pen, a paper clip, a bottle cap, a small figure, a rock, a spoon, a golf ball, or a ping pong ball. - a dish tub or large mixing bowl about 2/3 full of water Week Two - a ball - a coin - a tissue/ paper towel/ piece of toilet paper - a die - vegetable oil - water - a clear cup or jar (consider using plastic for safety) - an Alka-seltzer tab - food coloring (must be regular water-based) Week Three - thin cardboard (like from a cereal box) - scissors - tape - a marble - something to stack and hold up a ramp. (books, blocks, etc.) Week Four - an unsharpened pencil - two paper plates - 1 yard of yarn - something to poke holes in the center of the plates (sharp pencil, ice pick, scissors) - adult supervision
35 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 0 - 1 hours per week outside of class.
Science is messy! We will be working with water, oil, marbles, and scissors. You are the best judge of whether your child will need assistance in class. If you have any questions, contact me.

In Weeks One and Two, we will be using water. Please take steps to assure that the student's device is safe from water. If your device is not water proof, I recommend either setting up a phone on a tripod or setting a computer away from the water on a folded towel.

In Week Two, we will be using Alka-Seltzer tablets. The tablets should NOT be consumed by children. Please do not leave small children unsupervised with the tablets.

In Week Three, we will be using marbles. Supervise children as needed to assure they do not put them in their mouths.

In Week Four, we will need to poke holes in paper plates. An adult should be nearby if your learner is not ready to poke a hole in a paper plate without assistance. We will use the plates as wheels. You are welcome to poke a hole in the center in advance of class.
