US Grade 9
This Literature & Composition course is designed to meet the requirements for one semester of a year-long 9th-grade English course. Throughout the 14 weeks, students will be guided through a variety of texts (short stories, poems, essays, novels, nonfiction, etc.) from a variety of global perspectives. Live sessions take place once per week. New material (including SAT/ACT prep vocabulary) will be provided during each class. Students will also learn grade-level appropriate vocabulary, grammar, writing skills. Homework will consist of readings with text-dependent questions and short answers questions. Two original essays and a short research paper will also be required during the course. Units of study include: Unit 1- Narrative Writing Unit 2- Expository Writing Unit 3- Research Paper Writing Week 1--Overview of Narrative Writing Week 2--Elements of Fiction pt. 1 (Characterization, Plot, & Setting) Week 3--Elements of Fiction pt. 1 (Theme, Point of View, & Style) Week 4--Essay #1 Writing Lab Week 5--Overview of Expository Writing (Essay #1 Due) Week 6--Making Inferences: Clarify, Interpret, & Connect) Week 7--Understanding Types of Evidence: Data, Example, Expert, Text Reference, & Anecdote Week 8--Essay #2 Writing Lab Week 9--Intro to Research Paper Writing Week 10--Introduction Paragraphs & Thesis Statements Week 11--Body Paragraphs: Topic Sentences & Supporting Details Week 12--Conclusion Paragraphs Week 13--Research Paper Draft Due Week 14--Research Paper Final Draft Due My teaching style is interactive. I am not the sage on the stage. Instead, I am a facilitator and guide. Therefore, lecture time is limited to no more than 20 minutes of each class period. The remaining class time is allocated to whole-group discussion and Socratic Seminar. In this course, we learn and grow together.
Learning Goals

Students will learn grade-level appropriate vocabulary, grammar, writing skills. Soft skills such as executive functioning and active listening will also be reinforced.

Parental Guidance
As with all literature courses, there will sometimes be challenging topics. When these topics arise, we will approach them in an equitable, respectful manner. All voices will be heard and respected equally.
Supply List
During 1st semester of this course, students are not required to purchase any novels. We will be primarily focusing on nonfiction, short stories, excerpts from novels, and poems.
