Bachelor's Degree from North Carolina State University
Hello, I'm Emily (or in Italiano, Ciao, Sono Emilia)!
→ A Bit About Me:
I was born in England and currently live in the United States. I went to a Christian private school when I was younger and then did homeschooling until college. In May 2020, I graduated with a B.A. Media & Communications for Marketing and a Horticulture Science certificate from North Carolina State University as I love the creativeness in both marketing and horticulture. While at university, I learned Italian up through the Intermediate level and fell in love with the language of which I teach now through private tutoring, public classes, and flex pre-recorded lessons. I've taught over 1,000 students around the world so far including those with ADHD, ASD, selective mutism, etc. I decided to teach Italian as a career because I graduated during the pandemic which was a challenging time for getting marketing degrees, but then I feel in love with teaching Italian and stayed with it as a career.
→ Curriculum: I provide print offs, worksheets occasionally, Quizlet links to games, links to songs learned (such as by Ed Sheeran, Brilla Brilla La Stellina, etc.), links or print offs off fairytales we are reading in Italian, coloring sheets, etc. In most of my classes, we do about 10 minutes of each class conversing in Italian through questions/ answers we have learned together. I can also give personalized curriculum for private lessons.
→ My Teaching Experience:
Since December 2018, I have taught on Outschool primarily Italian (public and private classes) but also other topics such as maths, gardening, book clubs, computer skills, and storytime classes. I have taught over 800 students Italian from beginners to Intermediate level from private to public classes for ages 3 and up.
Before that, I had tutored children (3rd grade through 11th grade) in a variety of subjects including maths (up through Geometry/Algebra 2) and high school Spanish as well as helped edit college and high school papers. I also have a passion for gardening and designing, which is why I taught some gardening classes to children for a homeschool co-op in 2019.
→ My Approach to Teaching:
My approach to teaching is to balance the facts that have to be taught with making learning fun. With some schools, they focus too much on a large homework amount that they lose their student's interest in learning, making it more of a chore: Learning should be captivating and fun-- and that is what I hope to inspire.
→ More Great Classes:
My mum Lisa Culbertson, who is originally from England, teaches many classes also, including Italian, British History, Fashion Design, and Book Club! See her classes at https://outschool.com/teachers/Lisa-Culbertson#abjst4rdav
