Class Experience

This beginner-level Italian course is designed for high school students looking to develop real-world communication skills in a structured and interactive setting. Learners will build a strong foundation in speaking, listening, reading, and writing while also exploring cultural aspects of Italy and Italian-speaking communities. Lessons are aligned with national standards for world languages, ensuring that students gain essential language skills through meaningful and practical applications.

The course includes structured instruction, interactive activities, games, videos, and real-life conversations. Learners may choose to take the course for a grade, which will include quizzes, speaking assessments, writing tasks, and projects, or they can opt for an enrichment experience, where they will receive feedback without formal grades. Each session is designed to keep students engaged through discussion, guided practice, and cultural connections, making learning both effective and enjoyable.

Each class follows a structured yet engaging format that allows students to practice and apply their learning in real-world contexts. The session begins with a teacher introduction and warm-up activity to review previous material and introduce the day’s topic. This may include a quick question, a simple conversation prompt, or an interactive poll to get students thinking in Italian.

Next, the teacher presents new vocabulary and grammar concepts, incorporating cultural elements relevant to the lesson. For example, a lesson on food will include traditional Italian dishes, while a discussion on travel might highlight famous landmarks such as the Colosseum or the canals of Venice. Students engage with the material through visual slides, real-life examples, and guided pronunciation practice. Interactive exercises such as matching activities, fill-in-the-blank questions, and listening comprehension tasks reinforce understanding.

The class then moves into application and practice, where students actively use what they have learned. This may involve small group discussions, role-playing everyday situations, or participating in interactive games. Short writing exercises may also be included to reinforce sentence structure and vocabulary usage. The teacher provides live feedback and guidance, ensuring students gain confidence in their communication skills.

The session concludes with a wrap-up and review, summarizing key takeaways and allowing time for student questions.

Homework is designed to reinforce what was learned in class and provide additional practice in a low-pressure, engaging format. Assignments will vary but may include:

Short written exercises to practice sentence formation and vocabulary.
Listening activities with authentic Italian dialogues or songs.
Speaking practice through short recordings or simple conversational prompts.
Interactive review games such as digital flashcards or quizzes.
Cultural exploration tasks where students watch short videos or read about Italian traditions and customs.

The teacher will provide individual feedback and a grade if requested.

All materials needed for the course—including worksheets, audio recordings, reading passages, and interactive exercises—will be provided digitally at no extra cost. No additional textbooks or external resources are required. Students will have access to all necessary materials through the course platform.

This course provides learners with a supportive and interactive environment where they can gain confidence in Italian while actively participating in meaningful and practical activities. By the end of the course, students will be able to engage in basic conversations, express ideas clearly, and understand key cultural aspects of Italian-speaking communities.

Learning Goals

Communicate in Basic Italian: Learners will be able to engage in simple conversations, introduce themselves, describe people and places, and express basic needs using correct vocabulary and sentence structures.
Understand and Interpret Spoken and Written Italian: Learners will develop listening and reading comprehension skills by interpreting authentic texts, dialogues, and media from Italian-speaking cultures.
