Class Experience

First published in 1953, Fahrenheit 451 continues to startle readers with its social and technological insights into the future, a.k.a. now.  Written during the age of the McCarthy hearings, it describes a world where comfortable, sedated, unquestioning ignorance is nurtured and encouraged. Asking hard questions is a dangerous offense.  

In this world,  television screens fill the walls of rooms, and TV viewers are immersed so deeply in the stories that the fictional world of TV is more real...

I am passionate about reading--doing it, teaching it, encouraging the practice of it. I believe the future of our country and our planet depends on a thinking, active, and literate populace--and I think of teaching this class as part of my duty to the future.
