Description

Class Experience

I have been fostering a love of reading since I could read. I love discussing different novels, genres, and diving further into a book than just reading what is on the surface. I find that once analyzing the different themes and symbolism within a novel it helps us understand the characters and story line on a much deeper level. I have led small book clubs for over 5 years with children between the ages of 10-18 and have a passion for reading as well as a Bachelor's degree in English where I focused on literature and creative writing. I have also been an active member of many diverse book clubs as well, both a participant and a leader.
Students will need to read the designated book before class to be prepared for the class discussions. We will be reading one book every week for 7 weeks.
Students will need to bring a copy of the book of the week with them to class (e-books are also acceptable copies to bring). - Week 1: The Iron King by Julie Kagawa - Week 2: The Iron Daughter by Julie Kagawa - Week 3: The Iron Queen by Julie Kagawa - Week 4: The Iron Knight by Julie Kagawa - Week 5: The Lost Prince by Julie Kagawa - Week 6: The Iron Traitor by Julie Kagawa - Week 7: The Iron Warrior by Julie Kagawa
50 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 4+ hours per week outside of class.
As this series falls into the dystopian, sci-fi, and fantasy genres there are scenes where violence occurs, some profane language, and sexual content. The violence sets the scene for the climax of the series and provide a more intense story line, and the profane language is used sparsely. This series is for mature readers. The book series is similar to the Red Queen series by Victoria Aveyard, Throne of Glass Series series by Sarah Mass or the Shatter Me series by Tahereh Mafi.
The following books will need to be read prior to each class:
- Week 1: The Iron King by Julie Kagawa
- Week 2: The Iron Daughter by Julie Kagawa
- Week 3: The Iron Queen by Julie Kagawa
- Week 4: The Iron Knight by Julie Kagawa
- Week 5: The Lost Prince by Julie Kagawa
- Week 6: The Iron Traitor by Julie Kagawa
- Week 7: The Iron Warrior by Julie Kagawa
