Class Experience

In this Irish Countryside Mystery, students will use logic, critical thinking skills, and teamwork to find clues and solve their way out of a digital escape room. Along the way, students will learn interesting facts about Ireland and have some fun.

The scenario is this...
You are traveling the beautiful Irish countryside when you think you spot a leprechaun. No, it can't be! They're not real. But wait, there he is again. No, he's over there! Or is that him behind that rock? How did he get there so fast?!? Worn out from trying to catch him, you collapse on a bench in tears. The leprechaun takes pity on you and tries to cheer you up with a story about his friends and all the pranks they play. You find out that there are actually five leprechauns that call this beautiful glen their home and they have a collective pot o’ gold somewhere nearby. They have agreed to reveal the location of their treasure trove to you if you can solve their prankster mystery.

Students will need to find clues in a Google Slides presentation (so they need to be logged into Google Chrome on a NON-TABLET device for everything to function properly), and solve puzzles, riddles, and trivia questions to unlock the clues to the leprechauns’ puzzle. All information needed is hidden somewhere in the escape room, and I will provide hints if needed. Once they have all the clues, they must use them to complete one final logic problem to get rich!

***Because part of the fun of this escape room is looking for the clues, learners will need to be able to make a copy of the Google Slides presentation (I will guide them through the process, but learners should have decent tech skills so they are not frustrated) so they can edit it in order to move objects/images. Learners also must go between the Google Slides presentation and the Google Form, so should be proficient with going back and forth between tabs.***

During class, all students will be oriented to the task, open the presentation, and then be split into teams of no more than 4 to work in breakout rooms. This will allow students to contribute more meaningfully than working individually or in a large group. I will be going from room to room to check on students' progress and answer any questions they may have.

***Note: Class is listed as 60 minutes long but depending on how long it takes teams to work through the puzzles, it could take anywhere from 45-75 minutes. I will be available to assist learners for 75 minutes.***

SIBLING DISCOUNT: Do you have more than one child that wants to participate? Message me after you enroll and I will refund you $3 for each extra learner.

Maryland Teaching Certificate in Elementary Education
Eighteen years as a public school teacher in Maryland and two years as an Outschool teacher have provided me the opportunity to teach learners from diverse backgrounds with a variety of learning styles. I began my teaching career in elementary school, teaching all subjects and earning my Masters of Education with a certificate in Gifted Education from Johns Hopkins University. Later, I added both Middle School Math: 6-9 and ESOL Pre-K-12 certifications to my professional certificate. Most recently, I taught middle school math, working with both accelerated students and those with Special Education needs. Because of my varied experiences, I have many strategies to help all kinds of learners.

Math is my passion because while there may only be one correct answer, there are often many different ways to solve the same problem. Exploring those different ways and finding a method of solving with which each learner feels most confident is what I love to do. I like to incorporate hands-on strategies, games, and interactive activities into my lessons to make math less scary for reluctant mathematicians and more engaging for everyone.

When I’m not thinking about math, I enjoy baking, cake decorating, drawing, working in my vegetable garden, and sewing. In my spare time, I can be found hiking, kayaking, bird watching, doing a puzzle, or assembling furniture. I look forward to meeting your learner!
