In this lesson, students will learn about the following scientific terms: acids, bases, ph scales and indicators. Students will use the resources listed below to carry out experiments on everyday household chemicals. They will then relate their experiment to the theory of 'Acids and Bases'. An aspect of the lesson will be delivered using slides with the majority of the lesson focusing on student-centered learning (discussions and experiments). Learners do not require any prior experience and knowledge but feel free to do some reading on acids and bases.
Learning Goals
At the end of the lesson students will be able to:
1. Define the terms acids, bases, pH and Indicators.
2. Investigate acids and bases in the home.
3. Identify acids and bases using the pH scale.
4. Write a paragraph/ Make a mind map/poster summarising what they have learned.
Other Details
Parental Guidance
Parents will be required to assist students when they are pouring hot water into the mug at the start of the lesson.
Supply List
Materials: Purple/red cabbage, lemon, vinegar, white toothpaste, ketchup, baking soda or powder, shower gel and laundry detergent. Equipment: Sieve, kettle, seven (7) disposable cups, large mug/ small bowl, spoon and paper towel.
