Description

Class Experience

Students will be able to identify the five body parts of an insect: 3 body parts, 6 legs, 2 antennae, compound eyes, sometimes wings. Students will be able to observe bugs and identify which are classified specifically as insects.
As an elementary science teacher and naturalist I have shared this lesson and activity with learners for almost 20 years, and it is always fun for me and a big hit with the kids.
To build insect models you will want to gather materials from around the house. Some items that work well are: egg cartons, construction paper, toothpicks, q-tips, pipe-cleaners, googly eyes, popsicle sticks, toilet paper or paper towel tubes, fabric scraps. Anything will work, the only limit is your learner's creativity!
30 minutes per week in class, and maybe some time outside of class.
