Introductory Structured Query Language (SQL) Programming
What's included
1 live meeting
1 in-class hoursClass Experience
This class will cover the basics of SQL. SQL is a widely-used programming language. Large websites like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc. all use SQL to store data. We'll first make sure everyone can download the SQL client we' re using. Then students will follow along as they learn how to query data. The course is very open and questions are encouraged. First we'll cover some basic commands: build tables, insert data into those tables and how to query data from the tables. We'll cover some of the most common commands first and possibly dive into more complex queries if time permits. We'll use a test database, so users will be able to (and in fact encouraged to) delete the entire database and rebuild it from scratch if they want to. I'll demonstrate each query one at a time, then allow students to replicate the query. And of course, answering any questions along the way. After this course, students should have a good feel for how to create a database, edit it and build simple queries in a SQL database.
Learning Goals
Basic SQL commands; SELECT, FROM, WHERE, DISTINCT, AND, OR, NOT, ORDER BY, MIN, MAX, COUNT, AVG, SUM, LIKE, Wildcards, GROUP BY, HAVING, etc.

Parental Guidance
We'll spend the first few minutes of class downloading the appropriate software. I recommend BeeKeeper Studio because it's free and open-source. Also it has a portable version for Windows. So it doesn't require any installation. It's just a matter of downloading a file and running it. If you want to go ahead and download it, you can find the software at https://www.beekeeperstudio.io
Supply List
While it's not required, multiple monitors will be helpful.
External Resources
In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
Teacher expertise and credentials
3 Degrees
Master's Degree in Mathematics from Mississippi College
Bachelor's Degree in Education from University of Mississippi
Bachelor's Degree in Mathematics from University of Mississippi
I'm a data / analytics professional working in healthcare finance. I have bachelor's degrees in mathematics and mathematics education from Ole Miss, along with a master's degree in mathematics from Mississippi College and a master's degree in industrial/systems engineering from Mississippi State University. I have extensive experience with Structured Query Language (SQL) and love teaching database concepts. I also teach mathematics and programming. I've taught all ages from middle school up through graduate engineering students. I work part-time as an adjunct instructor for various colleges/universities in the area and online. I love seeing people learn new concepts, especially as it relates to data and analytics.
