I grew up with a Deaf family member. I learned the basics of American Sign Language at a very young age and found it incredibly helpful as I moved through childhood and into adulthood. I could communicate with other children who were clearly frustrated that no one either could or was willing to take the time and make the effort to interact with them. As an adult, I studied American Sign Language in college so that I could better communicate with the many deaf and hearing impaired members of my community.
Handouts will be uploaded to the classroom prior to each class meeting. These handouts will consist mainly of visual images of different ASL vocabulary covered during class. There may also be examples of ASL conversation (via images) in the handouts as well. These will greatly aid in the learner's ability to practice and retain ASL vocabulary while outside of class.
In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
An assessment of each learner will be given to parents at the end of the 10-week course upon request. I can also provide a certificate of completion for students upon request as well.
No live meetings, and an estimated 0 - 1 hours per week outside of class.
It is possible that there may be discussions concerning signing about gender identification, pronouns, etc. in class. I understand that for some this is a sensitive topic, but it is something that is a part of sign language and will be discussed in class (particularly, the class which teaches about personal and possessive pronouns as well as the class discussing family signs). Please be informed that this class uses a 3rd party tool that has been approved by Outschool. Kahoot or visit https://kahoot.it/ No account is required. Game ID will be provided.
