 Week 1
Lesson 1
Introduction to the Veterinary Practice Team
We will explore the various roles that veterinary practice team members have in the care of clients/patients. Students will be provided some video links to a variety of veterinary professional career options and will be asked to share their thoughts on what excited them about what they watched.
 Week 2
Lesson 2
Canine/Feline Body Language Signals
Students will learn some canine/feline body language signals and why it is important to understand them. Students will be provided with videos on canine and feline communication to better understand concepts from class discussion. Learners will focus on understanding what animals are trying to tell us by looking at photos in the recorded lesson and responding to teacher prompts and questions in the classroom post.
 Week 3
Lesson 3
Physical Exams and Vital Signs
We will discuss the importance of a pet’s annual physical exam, and students will learn the basics of how a doctor conducts the exam. Normal vital signs will be reviewed. Fear Free Canine and feline restraint techniques will be discussed and “kitty burritos” will be practiced. BRING A SMALL TO MEDIUM SIZED STUFFED ANIMAL AND A TOWEL. Videos will be shared on the physical exam and taking vital signs. Learners will be asked to share a photo or a video of their “kitty burrito” in the classroom.
 Week 4
Lesson 4
Surgery
Surgery prep, surgery/OR conduct, and surgical recovery will be discussed. A variety of surgical equipment and surgical instruments will be learned. There will be carefully selected YouTube videos added to this lesson that have surgery in them, as well as a couple that do not. They will be labeled. If your learner does not want to watch these videos, that is COMPLETELY FINE!
 Week 5
Lesson 5
Radiology and Dentistry
How we take X-rays and X-ray safety will be discussed. A variety of radiograph photos will be shown in the recording and students will be able to “read the X-Rays”! Questions will allow students to be the “Radiologists” as they decide what they see on the XRays. I will also share my favorite story of something that I saw in practice in this recording! The importance of dental care and how a common veterinary dental exam/cleaning will be shown.
 Week 6
Lesson 6
Veterinary Laboratories
Veterinary laboratories are very important in keeping our pets healthy and to diagnose any problems. Common lab tests will be discussed in the recording and some slides will be shown to give students a chance to see what a veterinary lab technician may view under a microscope
I have been a certified veterinary technician for more than 30 years, have a MEd from Colorado State University and I am now finishing up my second Master’s program and will have a Master of Veterinary Education (MVEd) from Lincoln Memorial University’s School of Veterinary Medicine by May 2024.  I have been teaching at multiple local community colleges in a veterinary Assistant Programs, at a local private university  in Equine Studies, and a variety of Veterinary Science programs for grades 3-5, 6-8, and high school. 

I am also a homeschool mom! At home, my family has 3 mini horses, a paint pony, 4 Nigerian dwarf goats, 11 chickens, and 2 cats!  

I am absolutely passionate about sharing my experience and love for animals and veterinary medicine with others! I am excited to help your learner reach their goals! 
In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
Students will be given videos that may have things they find they don’t want to watch, such as the week we review diseases and surgery.  These are only for those who would like additional learning. No one is required to watch videos that they may think could be disturbing to them.
